Western flicks have always offered an all-you-can-eat buffet of evil characters. There are the villains who wind up being good, the heroes fighting outside the law, noble gangsters, spineless crooks, and a corral’s worth of corrupt sheriffs. We’re honoring the whole lot of ’em, because who doesn’t secretly relish rooting for the bad guys?

The "Troubles" of 1981 Ireland was the topic of discussion yesterday after the premiere of Hunger, Turner Prize-winner Steve McQueen's (not that McQueen) biopic about the final weeks of IRA hunger-striker Bobby Sands. Set at the notorious Maze prison, the film is already sparking controversy because of its unmistakable parallels with current prison abuses at Guantanamo Bay and Abu Ghraib, and its sympathetic portrait of a man who destroyed his body for a belief.

But, McQueen told Reuters, to find parallels between the character of Sands and a modern day suicide bomber would be a fallacy. And should anyone think so, McQueen advised they "watch the film again and look and listen," He added, "In Hunger there is no simplistic notion of 'hero' or 'martyr' or 'victim.'" Jan Younghusband, the film's executive producer, was less reluctant to connect Sands with the notion of suicide bombing. "You look at suicide bombers and wonder what it is that drives them to kill themselves in their attempt to make the world better," she told The Independent. "This is a very contemporary issue, destroying your body for something you believe in. We look at terrorists and we think, 'Aren't they horrible' they are blowing us up.' But we have to ask what is our role in that? We are not without responsibilities."

One person who truly did have to sacrifice his body was Michael
Fassbender, the 31-year-old actor who starved himself for two months
and dropped 40 pounds to gear up for his portrayal of Sands. "It really
focused Michael on the role," McQueen told the Times Online.
"He changed as a person, becoming clearer and more inward-looking." As
for Fassbender, who survived on a 500-calorie-per-day diet of berries,
nuts and sardines, he only had this to say: "I'd be lying if I said it
wasn't tough."

If Hunger's controversy weren't enough, another festival IRA flick is drawing ire even before its premiere. Fifty Dead Men Walking,
based on one of the most important agents to infiltrate the IRA and
prevent dozens of murders and bombings during the Troubles, is being
criticized for portraying what the agent himself called a "totally
distorted" sequence of events. "That version of events is wholly
untrue," Martin McGartland told the Guardian UK
about the film, starring Sir Ben Kingsley. "My mother's house was
attacked, my brother left for dead after a beating, long after I was
gone from Belfast and in hiding. They should have represented my story
more accurately and fairly."

Check out Variety's Festival Central for a review of Hunger as well as other exclusive festival news, reviews and interviews, like this one with Michael Moore on his new film.

There's a moment in Prince Caspian towards the end of the first act when Lucy, the youngest Pevensie sibling, dreams she's walking through Narnia as it once was -- lush and green, with dancing trees and bright flower petals that swirl in humanoid shapes. She sees Aslan, the heroic lion, and asks why he doesn't swoop in and save Narnia once more from the darkness it's fallen under. "Nothing ever happens the same way twice," he tells her. It's arguably the most beautiful scene in the whole film, and also a fitting description for this, the second chapter in The Chronicles of Narnia series.

Prince Caspian opens as ominously as the first film -- instead of the Blitz bombing of London, however, we're given the birth of a child. He is the son of Miraz (Sergio Castellitto), the sinister brother of the late King. Having dispatched his sibling and created an heir, Miraz is ready to seize the throne -- but for his nephew Caspian. If you're thinking this sounds suspiciously like a certain Shakespearean tragedy, you wouldn't be alone. In any event, Narnia is not the place it once was: 1,300 years have passed, and a vicious race of man known as the Telmarines have taken over. They believe the land's history of magical talking animals and mythical creatures mere folklore. But Caspian's flight from certain execution reawakens the forest, and recalls the Pevensies from London -- for whom only a year has passed -- to once again defend the land.

Yes, The Chronicles of Narnia has aged and matured with its stars -- Caspian is darker, with a richer plot and more nuanced performances from the fledgling actors. But the maturation is relative. Instead of a children's story like The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, this chapter is unmistakably aimed at Tweens. Almost no time is wasted on subtleties like plausible exposition -- How do we know these are the ruins of the castle Cair Paravel? Well look, here, resting pristinely on the ground, is a piece from my chess set that has managed not to tarnish or bury in over a millennium. Instead the film focuses primarily on hormone-driven eye candy: Caspian (Ben Barnes) and a wholly improbable romance between him and Susan (Anna Popplewell). Puh-leaze.

Director Andrew Adamson told AMCtv.com that for his second go-round at Narnia,
he wanted to play up the series' epic qualities. And in some ways he
succeeded: The use of landscape in the camera-work, for instance, lends
the film a much larger scope than the original. But this scope only
serves as a reminder that Caspian has all of the trappings of
an epic without any of the gravitas. Lines are delivered with the
utmost weight and come off contrived and unbelievable. Adamson's use of
music, which was charmingly contemporary in the first film, has
devolved into typical orchestral background fare that too often informs
the audience how it should be feeling.

That's not to say Abramson didn't do a few things well. As far as
the CG is concerned, there's a marked improvement in the talking
animals from the first film. In particular, the rapier-wielding mouse
Reepicheep -- voiced by the talented Eddie Izzard and bearing a
remarkable resemblance to Shrek 2's Puss In
Boots (Adamson directed both films) -- is a brilliantly-clever caricature who makes for the movie's
best and funniest moments. The battle scenes too are much improved from
the original, with a showdown between Peter Pevensie (William Moseley)
and Miraz that outperforms what you might expect from a PG rating.

But these minor marvels do little to enhance what is ultimately a
flat-footed film, lacking in the magic that made the first a spectacle,
and the consequence that would make this attempt epic. Indeed, nothing
ever happens the same way twice. But for all of the departures that Prince Caspian makes, you might be left wondering if same might have been better.

Next week, the world will witness the release of Postal, the latest film by Germany's Uwe Boll, that country's greatest cinematic export since Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Werner Herzog and Wolfgang Petersen. And Tom Tykwer. And Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, Wim Wenders... and well, most of the graduating class of the Munich Academy for Television and Film. The point is not that you can throw a rock and hit at least three other better directors than Uwe Boll, but that only Uwe Boll has received the singular tag, "World's Worst Director." There are petitions to bring a halt to his career; each of his films is greeted with howls of derision.

When Wired writer Chris Kohler described Postal, a 9/11 satire, as "90 minutes of flat jokes," Boll responded with an email reading, "your review shows me only that you dont understand anything about movies and that you are a untalented wanna bee filmmaker with no balls and no understanding what Postal is...people like you are the reason that independent movies have no chance anymore." This gave me pause. Had we all, indeed, underestimated Dr. Boll? (He holds a doctorate in literature.) Were we responsible for destroying independent cinema? Had we overlooked the spark of genius in his work? To try to understand him better, I watched his oeuvre -- House of the Dead, Alone in the Dark and Bloodrayne -- to see what I had missed.

Writing "oeuvre" and "Uwe Boll" in the same sentence is like saying "McDonald's" and "cuisine" in the same breath, but watching Boll's oeuvre you do instantly see the hallmark of an auteur: repeated motifs, an all-encompassing world view and an obsession with neck breaking. Boll is a big fan of neck breaking and in House of the Dead and Alone in the Dark, angry zombies break so many necks that you wonder if Boll experienced some kind of chiropractic accident as a child. But his hatred of the neck is nothing compared to his hatred of the head, and all of his movies feature heads exploding in close-up.

House of the Dead
His first American movie, House of the Dead was seen as a sub-par knock-off of a sub-par video game but it is actually Boll's case against God. "It all started when we came here for a rave," one character moans. "And now all that remains is the stink of death." Indeed there is a stink, but is it of death? The overclass get to the rave... and everyone is dead! That has to be a metaphor: In an Uwe Boll film, everything must serve both as itself, and as a critique of itself. His special effects are not only deployed to show half-invisible scorpion dogs, but to show how pathetic special effects really look. His actors are not just playing characters, but their wooden performances reveal the limits of acting.

And the unblinking camera is constantly watching. Boll's camera sees all, usually from a God-like viewpoint high up in the sky. The camera is a voyeur, peeking out from behind bushes, ogling actresses as they strip off their tops and drooling over their perky bottoms. In Uwe's universe, God is a creepy pervert. But while House of the Dead is concerned with the death of God, Alone in the Dark is about the futility of knowledge and the limits of knowing.

Alone in the Dark
With his doctorate in literature, Boll understands academia more than any other filmmaker. While some directors portray the world of archeology and museums as dusty places full of books and science, Boll shows us that it is actually a land of scary monsters, heavily armed researchers and girls who wear tight pants. There is a direct link in Boll's universe between the tightness of a woman's pants and her IQ, with Tara Reid, who plays a museum curator, wearing the tightest pants of all. Boll also likes actresses who show their breasts. Tara Reid does not show her breasts for his omnipotent camera and so he lamented her performance saying, "Perhaps this is not the genre for her." But he has nothing but praise for Kristanna Loken who obligingly doffed her top in Bloodrayne; real Romanian prostitutes were also used as extras.

Bloodrayne
Bloodrayne is set in some vague medieval period and cast with slumming actors whose mere presence in the credits reveals that they will do anything for money. Here Boll's hatred of necks reaches its zenith with scene after scene of the offensive body part being bitten, torn, and mutilated. Bloodrayne is an orgy of decapitation, a sign that Boll has become bitter and angry with thinking, perhaps because it is impossible to think about his movies without suffering a headache. In Bloodrayne he has obviously abandoned making sense: His movies have become the void, devoid of meaning and logic. If art is a mirror held up to reveal nature, then Uwe Boll movies are mirrors that are held up... and suddenly explode into a thousand stabby pieces into our faces.

Nietzsche said, "If you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you." Uwe Boll movies reflect our own empty, dull stares; exposing us all as prostitutes who will do anything for money, paralyzed in a cheap and unconvincing world with no purpose than to have our necks broken, our heads exploded and to watch Uwe Boll movies. But beware! Gaze long into Uwe Boll movies and Uwe Boll will gaze down the front of your shirt and try to see your boobs.

Just a bare bones website with information about Mike's video store, Movie Madness, in Portland, Oregon. So why celebrate it on AMCtv.com? Because it's the only video store that's also a museum of authentic movie costumes and props. Imagine going to rent Psycho and, at the same time, being able to see the prop knife used in the iconic shower scene. That deserves a nod from film fans far and wide. And, for those that can't visit in person, owner Michael Clark includes photos of some of his "pieces of movie history" online.

How exactly does a Portland man end up with 80 costumes and 40 props used in his favorite movies? before I knew it I won this incredible piece." Even though it cost him
$3,500 and he didn't remember the outfit until he went home and

Perhaps Blindness was an odd choice to open the Cannes Film Festival. Director Fernando Meirelles (City of God) thought so: He said at a news conference after the screening of his grim drama, "To be honest, I still don't think this is the best film to open a festival." Nevertheless, his tale about a mysterious disease that strikes the majority of society blind was front and center last night at the premiere. The film examines society's descent into chaos when the disease prompts a shocking and dehumanizing response from the government -- victims are rounded up, sent to internment camps, and stripped of their identities -- and in the wake of disasters like Hurricane Katrina, the 2005 tsunami and the crisis in Darfur, leaves little allegory up to interpretation.

"The story deals with something we have to confront, which is our own inability to see what's going on around us," Blindness co-star Danny Glover told the BBC. "When I was born, there were 2.5 billion people in the world. Now 2.5 billion people earn less than $2 a day and we don't see that. We're blind to them."

This film has been a pet project of Mereilles for quite some time. Based on the novel by Portuguese Nobel Prize Winner Jose Saramango, the director had tried to buy the rights to the story before he had even attempted to make a feature film, only to be turned down by the author who believed that cinema destroyed imagination. But Mereilles persisted because "I like the idea of the fragility of society," he explained to the Los Angeles Times, "of how primitive we are as human beings. We have a little cover of sophistication and without it it's all about survival."

In the second half of the film, prisoners living in blind squalor and hunger turn on each other. The only person unafflicted is star Julianne Moore's character, who sneaks into a camp to be with her husband, but soon becomes a matriarch among the inmates. She too, has her demons, as Moore explained to the BBC: "I wanted her to walk a line between responsibility and irresponsibility," she said. "There are some things that she does that are quite brutal and vigilante-like. But in heroism, sometimes people get hurt who are not in the circle we are protecting."

A film that shines a harsh light may not have been the obvious choice to kick off a glitz-filled week, but as Reuters reported, festival juror and outspoken political activist Sean Penn had these words of reminder following the film: "Whatever we select for the Palme d'Or," he said of the top prize, for which Blindness is in competition, "We're going to feel very confident that the...maker of that film was very aware of the times in which he lives."

Director Andrew Adamson skyrocketed to fame with Shrek and Shrek 2. After his Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe for Disney made nearly $750 million, he set his sights on the sequel, Prince Caspian. Adamson talks with AMCtv.com about bloodless violence and relaxing with video games.

Q: Can you set up Prince Caspian for us?

A: This film take place 1300 years later than the first film. The Telmarines have destroyed all that was good in the last film: Narnia has become a very dark place where evil abounds. You'll see the darkness everywhere, from the acting to the battles scenes to the sounds you hear and, of course, in the music.

Q: What did you learn from the first movie that helped you with Prince Caspian?

A: One of the things I learned was a better use of my locations. And I watched a lot of more epic films to see how others had used wide shots and the like. I didn't want to bore the audience -- I wanted to engage them completely. So I went into it very conscientiously with respect for the series of books.

Q: This film is full of battle sequences yet not much blood. There's one scene with just a dab of it on the lip.

A: And blood on the neck, and, I think, on the leg. I actually
didn't know how much I was going to be allowed to do. Ratings is just
the hardest thing for a filmmaker. The MPAA worked with us really well;
they tried to give me as much feedback as they could as to what was
acceptable, but sometimes you do get the comment, "This is a bit too
nasty."

Q: How do you test the level of violence?

A: What I find is the most useful thing is watching it with
children. I was particularly pleased with the one-on-one swordfight.
You don't miss the blood. You feel the intensity, the reality,
because everyone's locked down their performances. Sergio [Castellitto] and William [Moseley]
both got into the physicality of it. Sergio would throw William a look after each take to keep him a little bit angry.

Q: What can we expect from the video game?

A: I didn't work as closely on the game with Disney this time
as
I did on the last one, because of logistics and
timing. But I tried to bring them on set whenever they could make time.
There are more vintage scenes and they actually showed the destruction
of Cair Paravel. They've done with the game what
I've done with the movie, which is taken ideas and extrapolated them.
They've been able to add action into story beats. We actually did shoot
additional material for the game itself -- about the Telmarines and how
they came to Narnia. It kinds of gives the game players more of an
interaction with the world.

Q: Since you aren't working on the third Narnia movie, what's next?

A: I'm going to take a year off. I'll have plenty of time to
think carefully about what I want to do next. I'm buying an Xbox 360.
I'm buying a PlayStation 3. I'm buying them all.
