Western flicks have always offered an all-you-can-eat buffet of evil characters. There are the villains who wind up being good, the heroes fighting outside the law, noble gangsters, spineless crooks, and a corral’s worth of corrupt sheriffs. We’re honoring the whole lot of ’em, because who doesn’t secretly relish rooting for the bad guys?

And after several days of making breakfeast for his own family ,who didn't really seem to appreciate it,he asks Jessie if he wants breakfast. Jessie who was probably starving, being without a house, slept in the RV, and covered in blue crap, he nods his head. It made me feel good because Mr. White had been real harsh with Jessie that whole episode and Jessie was having a real hard time and couldn't get a break and Mr. White wouldn't listen to him. When he offered him breakfast you knew that Mr. White was cool, he really does like Jessie.

But soon thereafter, filmmakers took on-screen depictions of graphic violence even further. Sometimes the results were profound; sometimes gratuitous. Read on.

Taxi Driver (1976)
Much of Martin Scorsese's output -- from Mean Streets (1973) on through Raging Bull (1980), GoodFellas (1990) and most recently, The Departed (2006) -- has been awash in frightening scenes depicting excessive violence committed by unlikeable Italian-Americans and other unstable personalities. But with Taxi Driver, John Hinkley's assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan gave the final explosion of anger an unexpected immediacy.

Cannibal Holocaust (1980)
This incendiary cult classic is the uncredited inspiration for the faux-documentary The Blair Witch Project (1999). A disturbingly grisly sexploitation flick, Cannibal Holocaust is presented as the true story of a film crew in the Amazon who are gang-raped, impaled, beaten, castrated, dismembered, and even forced to have an abortion. The numerous real animal killings (which include a horrific turtle beheading) led Italian authorities to suspect that director Ruggero Deodato's footage was real. He was arrested on suspicion of murder for making a snuff film, and faced the possibility of life in prison following the movie's 1980 Milan premiere.

Scarface (1983)
Like its namesake predecessor, Howard Hawks' Scarface: Shame of the Nation (1932), Brian De Palma's modern gangster remake (starring Al Pacino as a depraved Cuban drug lord) was severely criticized for its over-the-top depictions of violence. Originally X-rated, the cautionary tale eventually was released with an R rating, despite having retained hundreds of F-words, glamorized drug use, a now-infamous chainsaw torture scene, and its outrageously bloody finale.

Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer (1986)
John McNaughton's low-budget "fictional dramatization" is a disturbingly realistic slasher flick based on the confessions of real-life serial killer Henry Lee Lucas (Michael Rooker), who ended up on death row in Texas. A ratings controversy led to a very limited and delayed release and an NC-17 rating. The film's detached and amoral documentary style enhanced each gory cinema-verite killing (fifteen in the film), which are depicted as a series of grotesque tableaux.

Natural Born Killers (1994)
Oliver Stone's visually-riveting film about media sensationalism was immediately lambasted as "evil" and "loathsome" for its violence-soaked satire on screen violence. Presidential contender Senator Dole singled out the film as a "nightmare of depravity." Its provocative story of two serial killer-lovers and white-trash outlaws (Woody Harrelson and Juliette Lewis), along with two similar films (Kalifornia (1993) and The Basketball Diaries (1995)), reportedly inspired copycat shooting sprees throughout the U.S. including the 1999 Columbine High School Massacre.

Pulp Fiction (1994)
Two years earlier, auteur Quentin Tarantino's gangster flick Reservoir Dogs (1992) raised its own firestorm of protest. Notorious for messy screen violence and sadistic sense of humor, the brash director upped the ante with this seminal, non-linear film that made hyper-real violence its centerpiece. (There's sadomasochistic behavior, random shootings, a homosexual rape and a drug overdose throughout.) Its two main talkative, anti-hero characters (John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson) are professional hit-men who joke and swear while carrying out ruthless executions.

Hostel (2005)
The new millennium brought with it the explicit horrors of 9/11, a lengthy war in Iraq, the shocking tortures of Abu Ghraib, and worldwide terrorist threats. Traditional horror remakes of '70s and '80s classics, such as Freddy vs. Jason (2003) and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) were refashioned with an edge, while newer fare such as Saw (2004), Wolf Creek (2005) and Sin City (2005) initiated interest in a new sub-genre dubbed torture porn (or gorno). The disturbing trend was highlighted by Eli Roth's Hostel (2005), soundly condemned for its visceral excesses, and the detailed torture, dismemberment and mutilation suffered by a group of hedonistic American backpackers in Eastern Europe. In the mainstream, too, a broader range of films appeared to be opting for more bloodletting and pain than ever before, such as in Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ (2004) and the latest Bond film Casino Royale (2006).

Tim Dirks is Senior Editor and Film Historian at AMC, an educator

Q: You played a sleazy agent on The Larry Sanders Show. Do you see any similarities between that role and Saul Goodman?

A: There's a similarity in that both of those guys are wheeling and dealing with other peoples' lives -- and not their own. They don't lose much if they lose: Saul Goodman doesn't go to jail, and a Hollywood agent doesn't lose a job if he f____ up a contract. They're also both performers. Saul Goodman is a bit of a performer in his life. He, like Stevie Grant, is putting on a show for the people around him because it suits his job. So Saul is the chess player and his clients are the pieces on the chess board. As much as he's in their corner, it's a bit of a game to him.

Q: What makes you so well suited to the role of shady professional?

A: It's all about realistic comic acting. Saul is a clown. I thought a lot about how this guy talks, and he fills the air with words because he's thinking on his feet, because he's improvising, because he entertains himself as well as some of the people around him... although they're probably not nearly as entertained as he is by his flash. Like a comedian, he has a cadence to his speech, he's constantly characterizing everything about him.

Q: Did you model Saul on anybody you know?

A: Yeah, I know people like that. I don't want to name names, though. They're probably vindictive type people. I made a movie called Let's Go to Prison, and I got to see the court system -- there's a lot of wheelin' and dealin' that goes on because our prisons are over-populated. I shot that movie in a prison for months, and a lot of the extras on that movie were ex-cons. In fact, some of them were acting and playing cons in the same prison in which they were incarcerated. I talked to those guys a lot, and they're amazing people to have survived that. There are lots of guys like Saul who are good at what they do, and some people probably need them. I don't know if Walt needs somebody like this in his life, but it seems like Vince [Gilligan] just can't stop thinking of ways to torture this guy.

Q: Have you ever had a need to call Saul?

A: I haven't, but I could imagine myself doing it. I actually met a bail bondsman because my friend went to jail. And he was a nice guy who really knew his job -- knew who to pay, who to talk to. And yeah, you definitely go to the guy who works his way around the system as opposed to the clean guy who just does contracts. You go to that shifty dude and give him all the money you can. This is what happens, man. These guys are real, and some day you too may have to go see Saul Goodman.

Q: You starred in a series of Miller Beer commercials in 2004. Was that experience helpful when you were shooting Saul's commercial?

A: It was, but what was more helpful is that I live in Los Angeles, so I get to see these lawyers on the backs of busses all day long. They always have these big smiles and they usually have one hand holding a phone and the other hand holding a bundle of cash. There are the accident lawyers, and then there are the guys who get you off when you have a DUI. I love those DUI guys -- they'll get you out of any DUI, which is a scary prospect [Laughs]. So I got to do some improvisation for the commercial, and I was thinking about those guys as I walked around my fake office looking like I was reading law books and all that stuff.

Q: Saul's haircut is pretty interesting. Did you enjoy sporting a mullet?

A: I came up with that! [Laughs] I thought he should have a really good mullet -- what I would call a business mullet, which is really clean in the front with a good long comb-over and then a cleaned up mullet in the back that just underscores the fact that he thinks he's still a young man, even though he's really not. Saul is the greatest kind of person to play, because you don't get to be like this in your real life. I'm just a dad, right? I'm takin' the kids to school and going to the office. But Saul Goodman is loaded with bulls___ style.

First, a letter from Karen:

"Last week you wrote that you thought the Wolverine film would do good but not great business. I think you're underestimating its potential, because you're forgetting about one large segment of the audience: The women who are going to the film to stare at Hugh Jackman."

Ah, yes, the Hugh Jackman Estrogen Brigade. And, well, who can blame them? When Jackman's all ripped and snarly and bearing the most impressive sideburns this side of the Civil War, even straight men start questioning themselves ("Hmmmm, maybe just this once..."). Don't ask me how I know that one, incidentally. Also, don't tell my wife. Please.

That said, I'm not entirely sure the HJEB is all powerful, because Jackman was pretty much all man-candy in Australia, and look where that one ended up, box office-wise. Maybe the sideburns are the key. In any event, while I don't discount the appeal of Jackman in an artfully torn t-shirt for some people, I'm not entirely convinced that those people will be the key to taking Wolverine's ticket sales into the stratosphere.

Second, a letter from Bill:

"New reader, catching up on your columns. They're great, except for all the Lucas hating. Seriously, what's up with that?"

Good question. I don't hate George Lucas -- in fact, I'm fond of saying that I think he's easily the most influential filmmaker of the last several decades, and possibly of all time. The modern cinematic experience is what it is because George Lucas has decided that's what it should be, and by and large I like the modern cinematic experience: I like seamless special effects, theaters with crystalline digital sound and all the other back-end bits that Lucas and his minions either invented or championed. So well done, George.

The problem is, in addition to being the most influential person on the back-end of the cinematic experience, Lucas also likes to write and direct. And, well... the best you can say about that is no one is good at everything. On the other hand, it was the writing and directing that allowed him to get to a point where he had influence on filmmaking (and to be fair, the dude has two Best Director and two Best Screenplay Oscar nods), so what do I know. Clearly, I'm conflicted. But in the end, he gave us Pixar, which gave us Wall-E. So it's all good.

The next letter isn't actually a letter, but a comment from my wife after she watched Speed Racer on cable last week:

"Hey, I actually liked that! I thought you said Speed Racer sucked! What's wrong with you?"

I'm not entirely sure I said that Speed Racer was horrible, though I don't think I said it was good, either. I did say that I wasn't entirely surprised it didn't do well, because A) Plotlines that work in badly-dubbed '60s Japanese animation don't necessarily translate to $150 million live action movies and B) Warner Bros. did a botch job in marketing what was essentially a kiddie flick to Matrix audiences.

I found Speed Racer a bit of a mess the first time I watched it, but it's been growing on me with subsequent viewings. This is partly because it makes a bit more sense the second time around, and partly because -- despite a very silly plot and a design scheme that resembles an exploding candy shop -- the Wachowski Brothers are doing some interesting things relating to cinematic grammar. Most notably I'm intrigued with the movie's time-shifting story elements, over-lapping images and other such wackiness that's only available now through the advent of easily manipulable digital filmmaking.

The downside is that the screen is so jam-packed with information all the time that you get visual overload, especially if you don't spend a lot of time, say, playing video games. That said, I wouldn't be entirely surprised if some of things the Wachowskis play with here get wider use in the future as audiences get used to this sort of information dump.

It's a bit weird to have all that going on with Speed Racer, but hey: Star Wars was kind of goofy, too, and look how influential that's been. And we're back to Lucas again.

Winner of the Hugo Award and the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer, John Scalzi is the author of The Rough Guide to Sci-Fi Movies and the novels Old Man's War and Zoe's Tale. He's also Creative Consultant for the upcoming Stargate: Universe television series. His column appears every Thursday.

Ah, the seductive delights of Hollywood premiere parties! Delicious starlets, the Leatherface Twins (aka Joan and Melissa Rivers) critiquing your look, the glorious high of knowing your movie is lighting up screens all over America....

It's glorious that is, until the spotlights dim, the party invitations dwindle and it's clear that the time to move on has arrived. Many horror icons stay in the business as consultants, directors and producers. But some leave the game altogether and find fresh territory to plunder. Here's a look at four horror icons who found beyond Tinsletown.

Patrick Bateman (American Psycho), AIG Executive
It's really no surprise that the bloodthirsty killer Bateman continued his corporate career, or that he transitioned into insurance. "I like to destroy things," Bateman said, with the merest hint of a smile. "For me, AIG just feel like home." It also turns out that Bateman was instrumental in the diversion of millions of taxpayer dollars into bonuses for AIG executives -- the same executives who lost billions on ireckless financial gambles.

"Dude," said Bateman. "I can throw a chainsaw down, like, several flights of stairs and hit a running target. Do you really think some senator is going to deny me my bonus? Patrick gets paid, son, Patrick gets paid."

Puppetmaster Andre Toulon, Seasame Street puppeteer.
Toulon thrilled pre-WWII audiences with such delightful puppets as Blade, Jester and kiddie-favorite Leech Woman. But in private, the master manipulator gave in to some perverse private demons: Following a protracted court battle with international superstar Kermit the Frog, Toulon was sentenced to serve 15 to 30 years for muppet molestation (a word to the wise: Never, ever go up against someone with Kermit's bottomless coffers).

While at San Quentin, Toulon learned what they do to puppets in prison, but after completing 12 years of his sentence Toulon was let out on a work-release program sponsored by the Children's Television Workshop. "I basically spend eight hours a day with my hand up a puppet's butt," Toulon says, "which is kind of strange, considering that's what I did time for. But I intend to move up in the company, so I've been working on writing and directing." Unfortunately, Toulon's three self-produced specials, "Elmo Gets His Frickin' Head Torn off," "Grover Goes Cannibal" and "Big Bird Gets Burned Alive" remain unaired.

Horace Pinker (Shocker) - Green Energy Advocate
Pinker thrilled audiences in his 1989 debut as an energetic serial killer. He had few roles since then, his only other significant credit coming from An Inconvenient Truth, where he once again played a bad guy -- the evil destroyer of all things good and the bringer of endless doom (also known by the shorter name "electricity").

"I learned a lot from Al Gore," Pinker said. "Here's a guy who's winning Oscars and making millions by pulling on heart strings and preaching doom while racking up a carbon footprint bigger than King Kong boofing on a rain forest bong. I figure, if there's a sucker born every minute, why can't I get a taste?"

Pinker has become the poster boy for ethanol-based biofuels. However, his advertising campaign, "Ethanol: 'Cause Global Warmin' Goes Good With Moonshine!" has offended some critics.

Duane and Belial Bradley (Basket Case) - The Law Firm of Bradley & Bradley
Blood is thicker than water, and families stick together. That's always been the philosophy of Duane and Belial Bradley, the formerly conjoined twins who have lived together their entire lives. In 1982, the brothers tracked down (and killed) the doctors who separated them, a life-changing event that pushed them into a new career.

"We just felt stupid," Belial said. "We came to New York bent on revenge, and we got that revenge, but only afterward did we realize it's very hard to sue a corpse. We could have cashed in."

Realizing their mistake, the brothers enrolled in law school at Ohio State University on a full-ride scholarship for disability ("I live in a frickin' basket, man," Belial said, "even Stephen Hawking can't top that."). They graduated at the bottom of their class, but quickly found success in the malpractice arena.

"We specialize in suing doctors for separating conjoined twins," Duane said. "It's a niche area, but we're doing fine. And if we're losing the suit, well, we just mail a copy of Basket Case to the defendant, and everything kind of works itself out."
