The Ten Faces of James Stewart
The Role: Stuffy and aristocratic Tony Kirby (James Stewart) falls for Jean Arthur, but can he stand her eccentric family?
The Movie: The Frank Capra-directed adaptation stars Stewart as the wealthy and straitlaced Kirby, who falls for the daughter of Lionel Barrymore, a wealthy, tax-dodging eccentric who gave up the world of business for personal freedom and whimsy. The movie went on to win the Best Picture Oscar.
Stewart's Contribution: Stewart shows that he can play the straight man, even as his character comes to value individualism just as much as status and success.
