What's up with the freakin' butterflies?

My apologies if this has already been discussed in depth. I am watching the series again, and I'm curious about Rosie's obsession with butterflies. The necklace she wears, the collage on her wall, and the super 8--there are probably other examples that I've missed or forgotten.

Anyway, Holder refers to the butterflies as Monarchs when he and Linden watch the film, and I was wondering if Rosie's interest in the insects might have inadvertently or purposely led to her death. It's rather "Pelican Brief"-ish, but generations of Monarchs do return to their hatching grounds every year, and the waterfront development may have threatened that.
