It's one of the reasons, he says at least jokingly, he'll be directing more. He's not alone. For whatever reason, more and more actors are moving to the other side of the camera.

The problem, says Shootout co-host Peter Bart, is that actors don't always make good directors. They're too self-indulgent, too focused on performance, too cerebral, too unproductive, and in the case of Chris Rock, he says, "too talentless." He may have a point: Rock might be a superstar, but his film I Think I Love My Wife failed spectacularly. "Under director Rock, actor Rock doesn't possess quite the chops to pull off this character," wrote Variety critic Brian Lowry.

Warner Bros. recently closed its Picturehouse and Warner Independent specialty divisions and Paramount Vantage folded into its parent company, Paramount Pictures. The specialty film business, or at least, studio participation in it, is dying.

It's not hard to see why when you read Variety's "Specialty films see rising costs." Notice it's not called, "Specialty films see rising profits." Box office totals for 2008 films from the studio-owned art house divisions totaled $161 million to date, down from $330 million in 2007 and $418 million in 2006. "Ain't no one taking a risk these days," says Shootout co-host Peter Bart. "You're seeing the big blockbusters, but the interesting spectrum of independent films you used to see -- they're not there anymore."

When he produced Tim Burton's Batman in 1989, there was a negative buzz about Michael Keaton playing the iconic comic book hero. "They thought 'Oh my god, what will happen with that character?'" he recalls. But when Tim Burton showed some clips at the Con, he says, "it changed everything." Suddenly fans were behind the film, and before The Dark Knight came along, it was the highest grossing film in the Batman franchise.

"This is where the viral marketing starts," says Guber. So, now that it's over, what films are Comic-Con bloggers excited about?

There were no TV shows interviewing movie stars at the original event in 1970; nor was there any discussion among the 300 comic book aficionados in attendance about whether or not their gathering in a hotel basement was too commercial. Times have changed: What was once an intimate geek gathering is now a marketing phenomenon drawing crowds around 130,000.

That's the question posed by Shootout co-host Peter Bart in a discussion of what he calls the "squishy" movie ratings system. Bart wants consistency, saying, "There's a significant conservative population in this country who want their children to be protected from extremely bawdy and violent movies. And it seems to me, at the very least, the industry has an obligation to say, "This is the code, this is what it means."

Since Wall-E opened at number one, the studio is nine for nine. "Pixar is the one entity that outdoes Will Smith in terms of track record," says Todd McCarthy, a guest on this week's Shootout Chief Film Critic for Variety. How do they do it? In the case of Wall-E, McCarthy says, "it's both familiar and very uncharted territory." Wall-E breaks new ground in many ways, but like Pixar's previous films, it still has mass appeal.

Is there anyone that doesn't like Pixar movies? Critics love them. Moviegoers love them. Now Disney loves them...
