Talk About...Is the "Star" Dead in Hollywood?
Shootout co-host Peter Bart wonders this week if movie stars are becoming an anachronism. It seems people are becoming less and less inclined to go see a movie because of its star. As evidence he cites a slew of formerly bankable, big-name celebrities such as Halle Berry, Jodie Foster, and Brad Pitt whose recent films didn't perform at the box office or even tanked.
Co-host Peter Guber takes a different angle and says that even if a big star doesn't guarantee a big box office performance, attaching a marquee actor to a film is still necessary to get the major financing that films require today.
Is the era of a big name star coming to an end? And what would that mean for stars, movies and Hollywood?

I would have said Blanchett before "I'm Not There." I mean, a movie devoted solely to Bob Dylan? Come-on!
