Is Toronto THE number one fest?
Let's face it, we like everything ranked. It creates an illusion of order in a chaotic world, right? And just because there's no actual grounds for putting some things in order, it doesn't mean we can't try.
The Toronto Star makes the claim that their hometown film festival, which pumps millions of dollars into the local economy and brings the city enormous world attention is indeed number one.
They quote Rebecca Winters Keegan, Hollywood reporter for Time Canada, that "Toronto has grown from its place as the most influential fall film festival to the most influential film festival period."
They quote Roger Ebert, who reports that Cannes had been considering moving from spring to fall but decided against it, in his theory, because they were afraid that Toronto would get first pick of films.
But the most damning quote is this:
Even the film critic for the influential French newspaper Le Monde has written that Cannes has been surpassed by Toronto in importance.
Can we have some attribution on that? And just how much was he tarred and feathered in France for that comment?
