Excerpt from Greenaway's New Film on View at IFP
To the small category of movies
that take as inspiration a single painting, add Peter Greenaway's Nightwatching.
I've seen films like this
work incredibly well, such as Eve Sussman’s brief and nearly perfect 89 Seconds at Alcazar, which was based
on Diego Velasquez' 1656 masterpiece, "Las Meninas," and premiered at the Whitney
Biennial in 2004. I've also seen
features that fell short – Peter Webber's Girl With A Pearl Earring, once removed from the Vermeer work in
that it was adapted from the novel by Tracy Chevalier.
Greenaway's source, as the title implies, is Rembrandt's "The Night Watch" – the painting turned 400 last year. The project isn't limited to film: there is an opera and exhibition as well.
Attendees of the IFP Market, running now through Thursday in New York City, can see an excerpt as part of the 28-minute "sneak peek" of films either near completion or on the festival circuit. Michelle Byrd, IFP's executive director, called the IFP Market a way to start projects on "the long road to building heat, excitement and money."
