Remakes vs. Sequels
Sequels and remakes appear to be the only thing anybody is making nowadays. But which would you perfer to see?
I'm am not arguring for or against either one I'm just laying out some pros and cons.
The pro about a remake is that you get to take something nostalgic and make fun for a new generation. It can also be intresting what you do with characters
Good Remakes:
1. King Kong (2005)
It's an exciting amped up version of the dull and slow paced 1933 film. It has all the favorite scenes (V-Rex fight, Empire State Building fight), but in COLOR!
2. Ocean's Eleven (2001)
An A list cast, more suspense, better acting. Nothing more needs to be said.
3. The Fly (1986)
Not only does this one deliver some gut wrenching special effects, but it also makes you believe in the sheer horror of decaying and becoming something unearthly. It also makes you believe in the romance between Jeff and Gena.
4. The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008)
So the acting isn't shakespear? So GORT turns into a cloud of metal bugs? This movie puts in the realism of visitors from other worlds. And the idea of clusters of aliens that live among us is even more ingenious than the idea that they only send one. It still makes the top four.
5. The Thing
Although it bombed at the box office, this remake is very terrifying.
The cons of a remake are that sometimes you can't reach a middle ground. Sometimes the story itself is too nostalgic and the subject has been done to death. Here are the list of would be superiors.
Bad Remakes:
The Time Machine (2001)
It tries to be one of those "Please nominate us" kind of movies. With characters who want to be oscar worthy and say memorable quotes. It gets so wraped up with that, it dosen't let you enjoy the fun of time traveling. What's sadder is that H.G. Wells own grand son couldn't fullfill his vision.
2. War of the Worlds (2005)
Another H.G. Wells story that couldn't get any worse. The movie itself isn't bad, it's just that it's the same old thing. Messed up family team together, everybody is scraming, all hope is lost, then the miraculous victory. The only new idea wasthat aliens come from the ground this time (courtesy of Mr. Speilberg). It's fun seeing for the VERY first time, but is very losy when you see it for the third time.
3. Halloween (2007)
Just another doby slasher movie.
4. The Pink Panther (2006)
Some parts will leave you laughing, others will just make you go, huh? It is a remake that goes to show you how low the idea of comedy has come. Steve Martin is bumbling oaf Jacques Clouseau. Who is hired by his long-suffering boss Inspector Dreyfus, to find the famous jewel the pink panther. The story goes down hill from there. With Jacques Clouseau squinting and doing one stupid gimick after another, you're left thinking "Not even Beyonce was worth it!" To wrap it up, Steve is overdoing a classic character, and begging for a laugh. Hopefully when they make their sequel I can add it to the worst sequels list.
The pro to a sequel is that you get to expand on a story that you've created. By introducing new characters, new plot twists, and raising the stakes.
Good Sequels:
1. The Empire Strikes Back
This movie is not only filled to the brink of action sequences, it makes the first film look like a episode of seasme street. With it's dark nature, new characters, and one of the biggest plot twist of all time, it truly is a site to behold. "No, I am your father," is CLASSIC.
2. The Lost World: Jurassic Park
People have often critized this film for having 2-D characters, even though the characters were some what flat in the first one. But what is fails in characterzation it makes up for with more dinos, more humans with guns, more chase sequences, and the return of a Jurassic fav, Ian Malcolm.
3. The Dark Knight
Obviously, I couldn't talk about sequels without bringing up this years phenomenon, The Dark Knight. Unlike most superhero movies, this one dwells deep in the realms of reality and physcology. With a ensemble cast, this sequel has something for everyone.
4. Terminator 2: Judgement Day
James Cameron. Hate him or love him, this is a must see. Not only does it make you care about your characters, but it also makes you think about the future, moratlity, and technology. Not to mention it gaves us the best villian of all time. The cold and deadly T-1000.
5. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
Although it's rating and dark themes was questionable at the time, it is a all around good entertaining sequel. Of course it wasn't superior than Raiders, but it did go in a diffrent direction than just be a copy of the first one. And gives you some of the most tense action sequences ever.
The con of asequel however, is that you are more tham likely to disappoint one fan or two of the original. Sometimes the ideas of sequels are liniting or just plain silly (sorry for you people waiting for Titanic 2).
1. The Matrix Reloaded
Most people love The Matrix and the possiblities it rasied. But the sequel is without a doubt a jumbled mess. It takes place a little while from the original and Neo must face his Arch nemisis Smith, while stop machines from destryoing the last human city. After that it just turns into a big FX show. With some fight scenes that don't make any sense. "you don't truly know someone until you fight them,". What the heck! A simple HELLO would do.
I know my list should be bigger but this is all that comes to mind right now. You can fill in the blanks from here. But to keep it simple: Remake or Sequel? You decide.

You really have asked a thoughtful question. You are 100% correct and your list is quite impressive. It seems that we are living in an era of remakes and sequels. Even the big fishes of the Hollywood are running after making remakes or sequels of popular films. Although, I am not against this trend; but still I am not an admirer of remakes. I find remakes as tea without flavor. However, I will talk in favor of sequels. I consider them as sheer continuation of films and so give a thumbs up to them. Well, it is entirely my view and others have full liberty to contradict.
