Who is Your Favorite Captain?

Where would science fiction be without a bold commander leading the charge? Lost in Space, that's where. Captains are the stalwarts of courage, morality, bravery and yes, sometimes even theatricality (I'm looking at you, Jean-Luc Picard). But as they say, the worst crew is a boatful of captains. So in a galaxy of capable commanders, who takes charge?

Who is your favorite Sci-Fi Captain? Are you a Kirk devotee, or is Picard more your warp speed? Is Han Solo a better smuggler than Mal Reynolds? Is David Bowman's Space Odyssey better than Admiral Adama's? Tell us what you think.

I have to go with the Shakespearian Picard, who manages to make any speech, no matter how filled with Treknobabble, a lesson in poetry.

Definitly James Tiberius Kirk, boldly goin where regulations tell him he cant. Prime directive,,, well,,, its sorta a suggestion more than a rule.

And always lookin for some action with any female alien.

I love your point about Kirk's stance on the Prime Directive. It seems like every episode of TNG Picard gave a speech about its importance, and every episode of TOS was an example of Kirk violating it. Sure, I'll have sex with this ambassador! Sure, I'll make First Contact with a species and tell them all about the universe!

Yes, Kirk was definitely act first, think later -- which is why he always needed Spock around to remind him when he was being a bit, ahem, illogical.

As far as outside the Trek universe, however, I'd have to go with Mal Reynolds from Firefly. He was everything a privateer like Han Solo should have been, and he was funny as hell.

Mal Reynolds of Firefly hands down.

It really is hard to beat: "If I'm not back in an hour, you take this ship...and you come and rescue me!"
