Superhero Match-ups
Comic book artist Warren Ellis recently started a limited series for Marvel called Ultimate Human, which to make a long psychedelic (it is, after all, Warren Ellis) is essentially an Incredible Hulk vs. Iron Man story. I couldn't help but be struck with the coincidence that while we read Ellis' story we're all eagerly anticipating a Hulk and an Iron Man movie this year. There have even been hints that the two films will nod to each other in anticipation of an eventual Avengers movie.
My question is this: if you could make a movie that pits any two superheroes against each other regardless of price, publishing house, or comic canon, who would it be?
Aside from pitting Marvel heroes against their DC counterparts (Aquaman vs. The Sub-Mariner for control of Atlantis, anyone?), I have to say that I think the most interesting match-up would be Batman vs. Wolverine. Think about it, here are two guys that are literally barely hanging on to their humanity and composure (at least in the Frank Miller version of Batman). The Dark Knight might be at a slight disadvantage here, but if he could come up with some nifty toys to even the balance, I think we would have a no-holds-barred showdown between two extremely grizzled superheroes. What do you guys think?

First the idea of Batman vs. Wolverine is brilliant, simply brilliant. I don't even know if I could top that one.
I wouldn't mind seeing The Hulk vs. Pitt. That would be pretty bad-ass.
What about Spawn vs. Venom?
Conan vs. Thor?
Transformers vs. G.I. Joe... oh wait... that could happen!
Spawn vs. Venom sounds amazing -- I don't think I ever realized how similar those two characters are. Though I'd have to ask -- wouldn't Spawn have a total advantage? He's undead, so he probably wouldn't be susceptible to the symbiote, so really all he would have to do is outlast Venom. And if Spider-man can beat him....
As far as G.I. Joe vs. Transformers, I think you've just given Michael Bay a horrible, wonderful idea. Congratulations, sir.
How about this one: Superman vs. Iron Man. The Man of Steel fights the Man in Steel? How is this not happened (aside from copyright issues, of course)
What about Blade vs. Spawn?
That could be interesting. But how about this:
Blade vs. Buffy....
While part of me is intrigued by the idea of Blade vs. Spawn, I'm pretty sure that one wouldn't work out so well since they are both anti-hero's working on the same side of the fence, although a Blade vs. Buffy does get me interest peaked, despite the fact I've never seen one episode of the show.
I think the idea of Superman vs. Ironman is pretty damn cool on a lot of different levels. Here you have this alien who is suppose to embody everything that is American, apple pie, baseball, modest and then you have Tony Stark. That could make a brilliant piece of film really, two heros that couldn't be more opposite of each other.
And please if there is a god don't let Micheal Bay or Stephen Sommers read this blog. The ultimate cosmic explosion that could happen could injure my delicate psyche.
Speaking of Comic Book Match Ups, I've been playing Marvel Ultimate Alliance the past month or so and I have to say this is one of the greatest games I've ever played in my entire life. Completely satisfied customer here.
Michael Bay should never, EVER, be allowed around a beloved franchise -- and I say that as some one who didn't entirely dislike Transformers. They guy has no feeling for subtlety, and I think that you need subtlety especially to do superhero fiction.
There's no drama in over-the-top, because it's too easy with superheroes. I think that's why I've never been a big fan of Superman. I always felt like the deck was stacked too much in his favor. The dude flies, he's bulletproof, he blows gale-force ice, lasers shoot out of his eyes, he's got x-ray vision and on and on and on. Where's the conflict? Where's the intrigue? And on a side note, you're really telling me the best his arch nemesis can be is a real estate tycoon? Puh-leaze.
Superman vs. Batman is something that I would want see, I mean the guy with all the powers against the guy with none. That would be an epic battle.
Hmm, I think the problem with the fight would be for the very reason you think it would be epic -- Superman is nigh invincible, Batman is mortal. I can't see the battle being very epic? Unless Batman finds a Kryptonite Batsuit (and let's face it, despite its effect on Superman he always seems to overcome it) he'd be totally defenseless against Supes...
I might be curious to see how Captain America's shield might hold up against Superman, though...
See that is what most people would think, but they fail to see is that Batman is the ultimate under-dog. No matter what villians he has ever faced, he used his brain to develop something to win. He's taken on Bane, Ivy, Freeze who, in my opinion, were some of the toughest villians.
Although you are right about the fact that Superman has always been able to come over his weakness of Krtptonite, which is what I think Batman would expect, especially from all their work together in the Justice League. I think he would go for a more subtle approach, like a Kryptonite powder, or even something with Red Kryptonite.
the hulk vs spiderman. ones strong ones quick.
MovieGuru, I think you have a point. And Batman is very resourceful. At the very least, it would be an interesting fight, but ultimately Superman is too perfect a character (I don't mean that as a compliment by any stretch, in fact I find it rather annoying0. I feel like when they were coming up with his character they just kept loading on abilities for plot-points, and now he's boring. I'd love to see Batman take him down a notch, but the deck is stacked against him.
And Bane? Mr. Freeze? I hope you're talking about the comic, and not the movies. The comic Bane, however, was awesome. He's the one who broke Batman's back and gave rise to Azrael. The Azrael Batman showdown is one of the coolest in comics.
Teddy,
That might be a cool matchup. But Spidey is so quick I think it would be kind of an annoying fight. He can't cause enough damage to hurt Hulk, and Hulk can't get at him. Do both just jump around until they get tired??
Green Arrow vs Hawkeye, I'm taking bets.
Hawkeye all the way -- how many times does the guy have to die before people realize he's invincible!
superman vs. the hulk
battle would never end.
transformers vs. the go-bots(remember them)
jaws vs. orca
