SciFi Power Ranking - January 12, 2009

On a week that featured major movement in the ongoing Watchmen debacle, a casting announcement for one of the most iconic science fiction characters ever (Doctor Who) and mass speculation about the possible future of the beloved Ghostbusters franchise -- any one of which could have easily taken the top spot on the list -- a dark horse came out of nowhere to take the prize. 1	-	*Judge Dredd* After the miserable failure of the first Judge Dredd, I'd never have expected anybody to want to make -- or even see -- another one. But with 28 Days Later's Danny Boyle behind it, fans are lapping up the new concept art like excited little puppies.
2	1	*Watchmen* So it turns out all that legal nail-biting was just posturing on the part of Warner Bros., which is finally starting to talk settlement in this whole brouhaha. A timely release is once again looking possible, and the fan-legion is pleased.
3	4	*Iron Man 2* Any other week and the casting of the resurgent Mickey Rourke -- to say nothing of Sam Rockwell -- would have been enough to take the cake. This spectacular news was simply out-muscled, but it was enough to kick Iron Man 2 up a notch on the list.
4	-	*Doctor Who* There's a new Doctor in town, and after all the rumor mongering nobody saw the choice of the relatively unknown Matt Smith coming. Up next? Speculation on who his Companion will be: Please say Lily Allen, please say Lily Allen...
5	-	*Star Trek* A recurring theme with the new Trek: Fans are so excited to have something worth being excited about that virtually anything will set the Net buzzing. These prop shots are as good a reason as any, I suppose.
6	-	*Ghostbusters 3* Are they already filming Ghostbusters 3 or aren't they? That's the question of the moment, and the evidence pointing both ways is enough to keep the fans rabid and the skeptics, well, skeptical. But everyone is talking
7	6	Terminator Salvation Danny Elfman's going post-apocalyptic, writing the score for McG's fourth Terminator flick. The man just keeps making smart decisions and increased anticipation is his reward.
8	-	*Tron 2.0* He's young! He's pretty! He's the new face of Tron! I asked two weeks ago how Disney was going to market a movie populated with oldsters from the original and now we have our answer.
9	9	*Dollhouse* Joss Whedon would really like you to be nice to him. And he says everything's okey dokey with his rumor-plagued new series. I really hope he's telling the truth.
10	8	Battlestar Galactica / Caprica The end for Battlestar fans begins this week, just as the first clip from new spinoff prequel Caprica arrives. Should we be happy or sad? Maybe we're all a little bit of both.
