Billie Piper Returns To Doctor Who

Doctor_who_2005_promo

We all have different taste in the Tenth Doctor's companions.

Me? I'm a Freema Agyeman man myself. Where as Rose spent her TARDIS off-hours sitting around the council estate watching Eastenders and cramming vinegar-soaked chips into her large horse mouth by the handful, Agyeman was an intelligent, beautiful and charming intern with a medical degree. Far more the type of person that a super-intelligent extra-terrestrial would want to travel through time and space with.

Still, I'm in the decided minority on this: Rose is definitely the fan favorite. So good news for everyone besides me! The BBC has confirmed that Billie Piper will be reprising her role as Rose in the fourth season of Doctor Who.

There's a couple of things that are pretty astonishing about this news. The first is that, last time we saw Rose, she was exiled in another dimension with no way of escape. But more incredibly, Billie Piper's presence in Doctor Who next season means that season 4 will contain no less than 4 companions: Piper's Rose, Freema Agyeman's Martha Jones, Catherine Tate's stupid and obnoxious Donna, and whoever Kylie Minogue ends up playing. The number could go as high as five: Lily Allen is also rumored to become a companion next season.

Boy, the Tenth Doctor's quite a swinger. Who'd have guessed?

(Clarification: For the record, I quite like Billie Piper. In interviews, she's lovely, smart and demure. I'm just not a huge fan of her character, which enthusiastically embraces some of the worst aspects of modern British culture. Feel free to call me an outrageous classist in the comments!)

Just wanted to say, you don't know how good it makes me feel to know that there is another Martha-fan in the world.

I agree with you on your points about Rose vs. Martha, and I am rather disappointed that the writers/producers of the show have decided to throw away such a potentially good character for the sake of a mary sue.

I must admit I really like Rose. She was a Bit of a chav but she was smart. I think she just hadn't figured out what career to go for. It was like she was in a rut in her life and The Doctor got her out of it. I'm glad she's coming back. I wonder how they'll do it.

There are only a very few ways they could make this work well and a whole lot more ways this could go wrong. I’m hoping for the best with Rose's return.

I wrote more thoughts about this on my blog too that you’re welcome to check out if you like.

Peace,

James

i'm super excited that Rose will return! yes, they didn't do enough with Martha, but Martha was inherently boring from the outset. One never got the sense that Martha was lacking something in her normal pre-Doctor life the way Rose was. and Billie Piper was better and more believable in expressing sympathy and concern for others, and adoration of the Doctor, than Freema was.

I have mixed feelings about the return of Rose and I think we'll just have to see how it plays out. It's going to depend A LOT on the story/writing. It's going to be a very crowded season and context will be important.

But I wonder if anyone knows anything about another rumor - a nasty, nasty, nasty rumor - that the BBC is trying to recruit Tom Cruise for a role in one of the three specials to air in 2009 (as well as Brangelina)? I've read a couple of reports, but...

Please, say it ain't so! I'm hoping that's a load 'o poo...

Yeah, I have a huge crush on Billie, whihc is very strange considering that I don't "go that way."

Sure, Freema is great, but those scenes at the end of Rose's final episode really got to me.

I sobbed like a baby when she left the first time, but I did that when they switched Doctor's too, and I was pleased as punch with the choice for the next Doctor and the next companion. I am mixed about Rose coming back because I like Martha so much. The show hasn't failed me yet, one can only hope for the best...

Hi there. I would have to say I'm a fan of variety, so I love the switching...although it would have been nice to see "Martha Jones" for another season. My husband is a huge fan of hers. I just found out via this blog that "Rose Tyler" is returning...Not that I mind, but I do agree with the fact that they completely wrote her off of the show...and am wondering what the heck kind of story they are going to compose to bring her back...but It's Doctor Who...I suppose anything is possible! He was SO SURE that he was the last time lord...and that wasn't the case, after all...

Well, consider you got great experience being on the show. Consider it as a great blessing! Look forward to the future. And many blessings to you.

Sorry, for double posting. I had to share that. =-) I need to share things!

Donna is the worst character Doctor Who has ever had. How they could replace Martha- who was AMAZING-- with that fat, ugly, obnoxious cow, I cannot understand.

Perhaps Rose returning is a way for David Tennant to leave-- I heard this is his last season...

OMG!! how can you call Donna (or Cathrine Tate, for that matter) that?! I looove Donna! I guess everyone's entitled to their own opinion, but C'mon!! Do you have to be so RUDE about it?!

IMHO Donna's been the only companion up to this point thats had any type of chemistry W/the Doctor! And she's the first one that hasn't tried to jump the DR in the first 5 minutes!

Sorry, double post,

BUT I have to say that Rose's return disappoints a little. Before anyone bashes me, let me explain. I LOVED ROSE during the first season. She and Chris E. had beautiful chemistry, but once the second season started, Rose was all Doctor-I-love-you-please-love-me-I'm-so-obsessed

She got better towards the end, and I will admit I genuinely missed her, and yes, I cried like a baby when she left, but it was her time to go. And she went out so well, such a beautiful good-bye...and now they're going to revive her. Ruin that whole emotional ending. I like Rose. I could relate to her, but she needs to go. Like, now.

I=OK, first of all, Freema Agyeman is NOT being "thrown away: she will be appearing on the second season of TORCHWOOD so all of you fans of Freema as Dr. Martha Jones cheer up because she will be playing the SAME character.

As for Billie Piper "Rose" ever since her first episode where she paused to throw a triumphant grin at the dying Nestene Consciousness before getting into the Tardis (definitley a "Leela" kind of thing to do) I was for HER. And I am glad she will be back for another season. The way we lost her kind of sucked so hopefully, if she and the good Doctor have to part company ever again at least maybe she'll be back on OUR planet Earth where she and Sarah Jane Smith can sit around drinking tea and reminiscing about their adventures with "That Man From Gallifrey."

Think of it this way: it's not really a Rose Vs. Martha deal. I for one like both characters.

After meeting the Doctor, Rose essentially 'grows up' (without losing a kid's sense of wonder) as a person and learns how to think outside the (no pun) box.

Martha gains a greater confidence in her own abilities (and self). Donna is indeed obnoxious, loud, and more than a bit concerned with her own needs over all others. Maybe she will learn to be a better person after a few more travels with Ten?

We can only hope...

Comments about Rose and the Doctor. I admit it that they should keep Rose as it is. I write the Doctor up, since I had been getting more deeper in the character. It be a torture for him to lose Rose again.

So speaking for the Doctor. It's going to bring more pain. Because I learn he loves her the most. And its going to break his hearts.

So, sadly, I wish they don't. But, its going to be done and so it will be done.

I feel bad for the Doctor because I know him as a character. =(
