In 1975 Steve Gerber and Mary Skrenes launched the short-lived comic book Omega: The Unknown.  Omega, the lone survivor of an alien world that was destroyed by robots, seeks refuge on Earth only to have those robots follow him there.  Omega, a mute, teams up with an orphan named James Michael Starling and together the pair travel to New York City.  The original series abruptly ended when it was noted that young James resembled Omega.

Now, 32 years later, that series is being resurrected by popular novelist Jonatahn Lethem.  Lethem is the award winning author of Motherless Brooklyn, Fortress of Solitude and his latest, You Don't Love Me Yet.  Lethem re-imagines Omega: The Unknown in a brand new 10-part series from Marvel comics.

Lethem is no stranger to science fiction.  His first few novels (Gun, with Occasional Music [1994], Amnesia Moon [1995] and The Wall of the Sky, the Wall of the Eye [1996]) were science fiction stories. Lethem was more successful when he began writing mainstream novels.  A writer's gotta eat, so that's where he spends his writing time these days. Omega: The Unknown marks a return to the realm of science fiction.

But Lethem had never forgotten his science fiction roots.  Earlier this year, he recommended that The Library of America, who publishes a canon of American literature, publish a collection of Philip K. Dick's books.  The result was Philip K. Dick: Four Novels of the 1960s, which includes the Dick novels The Man in the High Castle, The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? (the basis for the film Blade Runner), and Ubik.
