Vote For The Next Transformer

Soundwave__buzzsawUSA Today has posted up a poll for fans to vote on the latest robot to be plucked from the 80's cartoon, over-designed so it looks nothing like the original and thrust up on the screen for Transformers 2.

The producers swear they care, but honestly, the contest's over before it started: the possible choices are Devastator, Jetfire, Soundwave, The Insecticons, Grimlok, Ravage, Mirage, Shockwave, Ultra Magnus and Hot Rod.

Soundwave's going to win in a landslide. After all, who's going to pick Ultra Magnus... the lame doppelganger of Optimus Prime who proved to be such a wuss in the animated Transformers movie that he passed over leadership to the utterly incompetent Hot Rod? The Insecticons and the Dinobots are cool, but Soundwave is just going to be the clean winner here: no other Transformer has that amount of cult following.

The problem is, of course, that what made Soundwave so cool is precisely what caused him to be dropped from the first film: Soundwave is a 200 foot robot who transforms into a tape deck. And that's what fans want. But Michael Bay has been adamant that the transformations in the films have to be to the right scale. Which gives us an over-articulated, two-foot tall Soundwave transforming into a portable CD player. Great.

Well I voted for Jetfire, so there! Yeah, I know he was just an assimilated Macross VF-1S Valkyrie but he was one of my favorite toys when I was a kid.

As for the issues with Soundwave, you know they'll just change him into something else, like a giant satellite dish and call him Soundwave.

Ross, they tried that: the giant helicopter in the first film was originally meant to be Soundwave. Fan outcry was so great, as I recall, that they caved and named him something entirely else. Fans don't want Soundwave unless he's an 80's boom box.

The weird thing is that one of the robots in the current movie went by Devastator (at least in the subtitles). Which fans cried about. In fact, there seems to be very little that Transformers fan didn't cry about. But I run around saying Jazz's "What's crackin', bitches" line all the time anyways, so what do I know...

I think Shockwave would be an excellent choice! http://tinyurl.com/y6zrsx

how's the line go?

soundwave, inferior. something something, superior?

i voted for the robot dinosaur. the robot dinosaur doesn't have to worry about paltry things like "size issues" and whether or not he's horribly out-of-date like soundwave.

the robot dinosaur wins.

Clearly, their only option would be for Soundwave to transform into... a 200 foot tall boombox.

Grimlock would be pretty cool too.

It's gotta be Soundwave AND Ravage. Just so we can hear Soundwave say his name.

Frenzy's transformed alt had to be a little bit of an homage to Soundwave...

You're right of course, but I think people may have wrapped their minds around the concept of "realistic" Tranformers having seen the movie now. We shall see but, in all honesty, I would pay handsomely to see a 200 foot tall cassette player. No one would suspect a thing...

the transformer movie to be quite honest was a bit of a dissapointment to be honest. true fans would have noticed the movie was inaccurate!.first of all devastator was the awesome giant robot when the constructicons merged,he would have been great in da movie! on my next topic soundwave is the man! he had such a big following when i was a kid, he would be a great character to put in the second movie but because of the scale problem they should at least put either the dinobots or jetfire then. dont get me wrong though coz i would love to see soundwave on the big screen!
