Saturday Night Live at the Movies
Adam Sandler in The Wedding Singer (1998)
The Classic Line: "We're living in a material world and I am a material girl... or boy."
Why It's a Breakout Movie: The Wedding Singer was a home run for Sandler in more ways than one. The movie put him on equal footing with one of Hollywood's A-list stars, Drew Barrymore, thereby elevating him to the status of real deal--a comedian who can, in his own squeaky-voiced way, act. The movie also earned Sandler the respect of hipsters and music-philes for its use of and allusions to 1980s music, from Madonna to Culture Club.
Other Notable Movies: Happy Gilmore (1998), Big Daddy (1999), Anger Management (2003), Spanglish (2004), You Don't Mess With the Zohan (2008)
