Shadow of the Vampire (2000)
The Bite: What if Max Schreck really were a vampire? Hollywood peers through the looking glass at itself in this highly stylized and fictional account of the 1922 production of Nosferatu. John Malkovich plays F. W. Murnau, a director so obsessed with bringing "realistic" horror to the screen that he makes a deal with a real vampire to play Nosferatu.
The Undead: Willem Dafoe plays the vampire, devouring cast and crew as Malkovich tries maniacally to finish his film.
Scream Factor: Dafoe's vampiric Schreck is a slave to his bloodlust, and his vampirism encases him in a cocoon of bitterness and isolation. So the true "bad guy" is Malkovich, who seems willing to sacrifice anything and anyone to bring his vision onscreen. Funny and frightening in turns, Shadow of the Vampire may be the most intelligent and original of Dracula-based movies.
