The Apartment (1960)
The Guests: C. C. Baxter (Jack Lemmon), ambitious junior insurance executive, and Fran Kubelik (Shirley MacLaine), the elevator operator he loves even though she's having an affair with his boss.
The Menu: Spaghetti and meatballs
The Occasion: Ladies, if a guy cooks for you, it means he likes you. In which case, you might want to overlook such mildly unsanitary practices as substituting a tennis racquet for a colander (though Baxter never follows up on his threat to use the racquet to "serve" the meatballs). We suspect that this isn't the first time he's prepared pasta this way, though probably never for a guest--it's the irony of the film that while everyone thinks of Baxter as a Lothario, he's really so lonely that caring for someone recovering from an attempted suicide makes this his best Christmas in years.
