True Grit (1969)

Commercially successful and critically lauded, True Grit proved that classic Westerns were eternally viable. It also represented the passing of a baton between one cowboy great -- John Wayne -- to another -- Duvall. Playing villainous "Lucky" Ned Pepper, Duvall faces off against Wayne (as Rooster Cogburn) and calls him a "one-eyed fat man."
