Open Range (2003)
By 2003, the Western had been re-interpreted in so many guises that this return to traditional form seemed revolutionary. Critics praised the easy camaraderie between Duvall's "freegrazer" Boss Spearman and his protégé Charley Waite (Kevin Costner, who also directed). Spearman's gruff exterior masks a longing for a permanent home, an acknowledgment that the romantic life of a wanderer must come to an end one way or another.
