The Verdict (1982)
Newman found his stride by playing characters with much to overcome, as he did with roles in The Hustler and The Sting. In The Verdict, he managed to turn a powerful, pithy courtroom drama into something even more profound. For the first time, Newman looks a bit haggard and weary, and without that youthful vitality that might have obscured his performances in films past, he shined. Newman, not just a lawyer trying the case of a lifetime, became the embodiment of redemption.
