The Long, Hot Summer (1958)
Up until the '60s, films rarely touched issues of sex and desire, and when they did, it was shown as untouchable and highly glamorized. This film -- loosely based on William Faulkner's work about a man, who after being exiled, finds his way into the lives of another Southern family -- explored sexual dysfunction with a naturalness remarkable for its time. It also catapulted Newman into the forefront as Hollywood's new leading man. His charm and sharp wit, along with his icy blue eyes and trademark white undershirts, captivated audiences.
