Slap Shot (1977)

The heightened popularity of sports movies -- including Brian's Song, Rocky, and The Bad News Bears -- prompted George Roy Hill, director of Butch Cassidy and The Sting, to film this raunchy, violent dark comedy about a fifth-rate minor league hockey team. The Charlestown Chiefs -- along with real-life hockey players, the Hanson brothers -- found that brawling, cheating and romancing the opponents' wives meant victory. Newman, as player-coach Reggie Dunlop, brought many layers -- plenty of which was outrageous and foul-mouthed -- to his washed-up veteran.
