Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958)

After the success of Tennessee Williams' play-turned-film A Streetcar Named Desire, audiences soon got a follow-up. Following in Marlon Brando's footsteps, Newman began using the "method acting" technique to portray his character -- an alcoholic ex-football star named Brick who abuses his wife and clashes with his father. Despite Williams' openly detesting the film for glossing over controversial plotlines from the play -- such as Brick's homosexuality -- this film became Newman's first blockbuster and sealed his on-screen image as the troubled opportunist.
