Harold and Maude (1971)
The Movie: One of the great cult movies from the 1970s, Harold and Maude was savaged by critics when it opened. (Variety claimed it had "all the fun and gaiety of a burning orphanage.")
Before the Kiss: Harold Parker Chasen (Bud Cort) is 20, rich, anti-authoritarian, and morbid. His favorite hobbies are faking suicide and attending random funerals.
After the Kiss: Sometimes you need a septuagenarian concentration-camp survivor with all the verve of Ruth Gordon to make you see life anew. The young misanthrope goes from being an unfocused nonconformist to being a likable eccentric with a real joy for life.
