Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro), Taxi Driver (1976)
Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro) isn't exactly what you'd call a people person: A mentally unstable Vietnam vet, he works the night shift as a cabbie and scoffs at all the street scum that he sees. Although he attempts to connect with other human beings -- a senator's pretty campaign worker, a 12-year-old hooker -- feelings of rage and impotence bubble inside him. So he buys a couple of guns. He initially tries to shoot the senator but eventually turns his barrels on more deserving targets, like the underage prostitute's fedora-sporting pimp, and becomes a local hero.
