1. Chicago (2002)
The best modern musical of all is like a big, glossy freight train full of razzle-dazzle motion: Catherine Zeta-Jones (Velma) and Renee Zellweger (Roxie) scheme, sing and swing their limbs; the Kander and Ebb score is fantastic; the Fosse-influenced choreography breathtaking. You could say Richard Gere and Queen Latifah provide show-stopping numbers but frankly this show never stops.
