The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962)
The Character: Stewart plays Ransom Stoddard, a crusading politician who owes much to the gunman John Wayne.
The Movie: Years ago, in a town out West, John Wayne secretly killed an outlaw, Liberty Valance. But everyone believed it was Stewart who shot him, ensuring the hero's political success. In the movie, an older, wiser Stewart confesses the truth to a reporter, who quips, "This is the West, sir. When the legend becomes fact, print the legend."
