Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939)

The Character: Stewart plays a Boy Rangers troop leader appointed to the Senate by corrupt forces wishing to capitalize on his naïveté.
The Movie: In the end, it is the good-hearted Stewart who teaches the crooked senators and their puppet masters to do right thing. Hailed as supremely entertaining by many (but fatally idealistic by some), the movie nevertheless made Stewart a star.
Stewart's Contribution: The role established his trademark qualities -- aw-shucks charisma and overpowering likeability.
