1. Lawrence of Arabia (1962)

David Lean, king of the epic, outdid himself with this nearly four-hour spectacle based on the exploits of T.E. Lawrence, the British officer who helped lead the 1916 Arab Revolt. Distinguished by desert scenes photographed in widescreen, the movie presents Lawrence's larger-than-life story in just-as-grand dimensions.
