The Enemy Below (1957)
The Crew: It's World War II, and U.S. Navy captain Robert Mitchum and German U-boat commander Curt Jurgens face off on the high seas.
The Mission: It may have taken a dozen years after the end of World War II, but Hollywood finally portrays Germans as flesh-and-blood, three-dimensional characters. Jurgens is one such German sailor; he is sympathetic towards his men and has lost two sons to the Nazi cause. Enter Robert Mitchum, whose destroyer discovers Jurgens's boat. The two engage in a classic cat-and-mouse game, even as the movie makes clear how much they have in common -- they are warriors of the sea with similar traumas in their pasts and concerns (for their men's safety) in the present.
