The Verdict: Spielberg earnestly recounts the story of L'Amistad, a ship carrying enslaved Africans who revolt and then end up on U.S. soil in 1839. The resulting court case over the Africans' status -- would they be freed or become slaves -- went all the way to the Supreme Court.
