Primer (2004)
The Plot: Two engineers accidentally build a time machine in their garage. First they use it to play the stock market, then to alter their personal lives. Paradoxes abound and multiple time lines are introduced.
Cool Use of Time Travel: Who wouldn't be tempted to use the wisdom of hindsight to go back and make life easier? Primer addresses this question head-on and raises some through-provoking issues about the ethical use of such technology.
Why It Makes the List: Primer does not hold the viewer's hand. This is a thinking-person's time travel story without all the bells and whistles and special effects, and made with a fraction (reportedly $7,000) of most movies' budgets.
