The Newsdesk 06.25.09 - Oscar Expands Best Pic Nominees; Transformers Breaks Early Records
• The Oscars will expand to include ten Best Picture nominees starting with next year's ceremony. So, basically that means eight Holocaust movies, one biopic and whatever Cate Blanchett is in this year.
• Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen shattered the Wednesday opening day record set by Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, scoring $55 million on its initial bow.
• Suddenly in-demand after The Proposal, Ryan Reynolds has signed on to the indie thriller Buried. We always knew Van Wilder would make good.
• The extended director's cut of Watchmen will receive a limited theatrical run one week before the San Diego Comic Con. Hopefully the extra footage will explain that weird cat creature at the end.
• The first trailer for Richard Kelly's The Box showcases the Donnie Darko director's eerie vision and features Cameron Diaz trying to give a credible performance while sporting '70s stewardess hair.
