TIFF 2008 - Interview with Bill Maher and Director Larry Charles on Religulous
"People should start to question the very foundation of their beliefs." Director Larry Charles discusses why he wanted to make the documentary, Religulous, and Bill Maher shares with AMC News why humor is key to the film.

This director Bill Maher, How can this man produce a movie saying there is no God. Basing on his humanistic warped ideas. I am a follower of Jesus Christ the Son of the Living God. Unless you people turn away from your evil ways and quit mocking God and telling lies about God you will be Judged. You all make me sick to my stomach. Our Country is falling and it will never rise up again. Because of men sins. You people in Hollywood all you think about is the power of money and believing in the nature of devilish evil. Well Gods going to take your money away along with all your boastfulness and lethel mind thinking.
The Second coming of Christ is coming back the rapture then all Hells going to break loose.Lets see if theres no God
Then I saw heaven opened, and a white horse was standing there. And the one sitting on the horse was named Faithful and True. For he judges fairly and then goes to war. His eyes were bright like flames of fire, and on his head were many crowns. A name was written on him,and only he knew what it meant. He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and his title was the Word of God. The armies of heaven, dressed in pure white linen, followed him on white horses. From his mouth came a sharp sword, and with it he struck down the nations. He ruled them with an iron rod, and he trod the winepress of the fierce wrath of almighty God. On his robe and thigh was written this title: King of Kings and Lord of Lords (Revelation 19:11-16)
"Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is an-ti-christ that denieth the Father and the Son."
"Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: [but] he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also."(1 John 2: 22,23)
"Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God."
"And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of an-ti-christ, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world." (1John 4: 2,3)
" The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is long-suffering to usward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance."
"But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up." (2 Peter 3: 9,10)
Mr Maher, Jesus Christ purpose was to come into this world for those like you to be saved , for it is written; "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." (John 3:16
All mockers will one day bow and confess that Jesus Christ is LORD.
Mr. Maher, so you are concerned that any politician that believes in a Supreme Being is not mentally fit to run this country? Well let me just guess that there have already been a number of presidents much more intelligent than you. Religion requires that we let go of our natural tendency towards egocentricity; let go Mr. Maher.
its amazing to me that you choose to worship a loving god that told abraham to murder his only son to prove his loyalty. a loving god that wiped out men women and children with a flood. a loving god that is going to wipe out the population with fire the next time. bill maher is trying to show how disillusioned and sick you people are for believing this nonsense. all religions are founded on mythology and folk tales. its about time someone made a movie about how religulous religion is.
Two comments jumped out at me: 1) "the more pebbles on the rational side the better off we are", and 2) "monotheism has sort of run its course."
Wow. That's all I can say. The intellectual arrogance is staggering.
Anti-religious philosophers have been trying to make these argument for hundreds of years -- trying to put reason as the ultimate authority and treating the human hunger for the transcendent as akin to believing in Santa Claus. Sadly, the fact that they will use humor to play off of extremist Christians means that they will probably get people questioning the value of faith.
I can't wait to see this film, but I suspect it will be chalked full of contrasting ideologies wrapped in witty jokes. In essence, Bill and Larry are saying: "don't buy their ideology, buy mine." Like I said, intellecutal arrogance at its best. Perhaps they should take some time to talk to some thinking religious people (which our world has a lot of) instead of assuming those beliefs automatically make you semi-retarded. Get a clue guys.

Dear Jenny, Bill Maher is not the director of this documentary, the guy's name is Larry Charles. You might want to pay closer attention to what you are reading before you go off into your fire and brimstone rant.
Why do you people care? If you are so secure in your religious beliefs, why are you so threatened by people that question and have different beliefs? If you are so sure you are the only ones that know the "truth", isn't your salvation secured? Why would you get so upset that the "heathens" question, for, you surely know, we will all be burning in hell and far away from you, nowhere near your fluffy cloud. My god, don't you people have anything better to voice your outrage over? Like....oh, let's say, the fact that we have hundreds of thousands of people living in poverty in our country? We invaded a country under false pretenses by our President and killed thousands of innocent men, women and children? That we have thousands of young men and women soldiers coming home with missing limbs and no government assistance in helping them to rebuild their lives? Where is your god in this equation? I think if there was a god, he/she would be very dissapointed in us.

Um, excuse my "intellecutal arrogance", but, the phrase should have read, "CHOCK full of contrasting ideologies wrapped in witty jokes" And no, Bill and Larry are not asking you to buy their "ideology", they are simply putting a different view out there. I think the name of the documentary pretty much says it all, your not going to be surprised by what you see, so, why watch it? If I read about a documentary called "Christianity and the Rapture", I would have a pretty good idea it would be something I would have no interest in watching. I have no problem with those who would watch it though, they don't threaten me or affect my life in any way.
Grovelady, sorry for the spelling error. I'm sure it reveals the deep levels of my ignorance. :) Seriously, my point still stands despite my spelling, these are ideologies.
You asked "Why do you guys care?" Firsly, who is "you guys"? I'm curious what stereotype you're using to group together complete strangers you know very little about. And also, we (that is, those who have objections to the obvious polemic of this film) care for the same reasons the filmmakers care. We disagree. I'm fine with disagreeing. I have many friends whom I have different worldviews with and I don't look down on them and call them ridiculous because they buy into cooky secularism or hyper-naturalism. I disagree with them, but I don't see them as stupid. And whatever you may believe, Mahar has no qualms about believing and blatantly labeling people he disagrees with as stupid. Granted, he's a shock jock (the alter ego of Rush Limbaugh, both who make me want to vomit most of the times). However, I find these sorts of films subtly deceptive. Agendas wrapped in supposedly neutral genres of documentary. Whether its Michael Moore or the Christian Coalition, let's call them what they are, entertaining ways to argue their case by mocking the opposing views with digital video.
Ah yes... THE classic arguement. How did we get here? Why are we here? Well, since we don't know exactly how old the Earth is or how old the Universe is or even if there was a beginning or if the universe just always was, we have no way of knowing. So since the beginning of mankind, man has constantly tried to find reason and meaning for his existence. Picture this: A man sits with his son on top of a hill to watch the sun go down, let's just say 3000 years ago in Greece. Off in the distance is a Thunderstorm where many flashes of lightning are coming from the large cloud formation. The son asks, "What's that?!" The dad does not know exactly but he's been told that Zeus the God of gods must be there throwing those lightning bolts at his enemies. Now, 3000 years later we know that that is simply static electicity at the largest scale. Positive or Negative ions are displaced into one area and must naturally balance itself. The point is, and the point I think Maher and the Director are trying to make is, that with time, technology advancement, and the base of knowledge in which we expand upon every single day, there are more and more explanations being uncovered which leaves less need for god to postulate the problem as the answer. Don't get me started on how each religion has had a profound way to control the masses and ultimately comes back to one thing, just like everything else: money!! I'm not saying Christians or Muslims don't want peace or any other religious group doesn't want peace and serenity but I am saying the strong major religions in the world had to convince all of it's followers to give money to keep them afloat (how about titheing Christians...huh?). What I think Maher brings to the table so eloquently and cantankerously simultaneously is how he can use these ridiculous religious groups who get into peoples heads so quickly and how ironic things seem when someone like me, who was raised catholic and then protestant can turn around one day and say "wait how can someone just tell me all this and then say Just Have Faith!". It never added up to me. I was just supposed to buy it because the people who were selling it didn't have any actual explanations for what was happening in the world.
Joel, you can call Bill Maher and what he is bringing to the table just as dogmatic as any religion but that is not what he is trying to do. He, and people like him, like Richard Dawkins author of "The God Delusion" are just trying to suggest an alternative to this craziness that is religion. It is all based on mythology and the sooner people realize that the easier it will be to make sound descisions in order for the Homo-sapien species to survive on this planet.
Grovelady and Luke.. my sentiments exactly!
To the nut bars out there... been there, done that, no thank you!
I am disgusted and appalled, but not surprised, at the blatant attack on what so many Americans and others hold so very dear, their religious beliefs. Bill Maher reminds me of someone who, in their misguided zeal, is trying to destroy the very One who loves him the most. Remember Saul (?), (Read Acts 9 in the Bible) and how sincerely wrong he was about God, and how God loved him so much that He interupted Saul's life, revealing Himself as Savior and Lord. Saul then became Paul, the apostle. Is there anything too hard for the Lord? Gen. 15:18. Let us pray for Bill Maher and others like him, and love them, but let us speak out and condemn this blasphemous "documentary".
Howard Reed
Luke, I think I understand your perspective. It sounds as if you want to defend people like Maher and Dawkins because they have seemingly altruistic motives in declaring what they believe is the truth -- that religion is dangerous. Honestly, there are many good points about religion being dangerous. As a faithful Christian, I am pained by the misguided efforts of so-called religious people all over the world. However, films like these are often presented by people who have no appreciation for the subtleties of faith. Like the documentary Jesus Camp, which I watched and admit was well-produced, I understood what they were critiquing well because I am Pentecostal. And despite some of their fair critiques, the bottom line was they were outsiders trying to explain to other outsiders what the insiders are like. Any anthropologist will admit that sort of thing has enormous limitations (the whole emic/etic argument).
Maher is not an acadamician like Dawkins (who I believe is misguided for entirely different reasons than Maher and Charles -- see the counter book the Dawkins Delusion), but Maher and Charles are trying to lump all religions and seemingly the whole idea of faith together. That, my friend, is nonsense that only people who do not understand the intricacies of faith systems and people groups can make. Yes, there are religious people who drink the proverbial red Kool-aid. I'm just saying watch out for the blue Kool-aid, too.
Science is an ideology, too (aka empiricism). So is rationalism. They all have philosophical roots. And if you haven't noticed, people in the West are tired of the arid answers of rationalism which say there is only what is in front of you face. I believe the reason why the New Age movement and religious fundamentalism have grown so much is largely because America has tried to secularize everything. I argue for a more holistic approach that admits that everything requires faith -- even science.
And Ms. Linda Marsh, sadly I agree that "nut bars" do exist. But I challenge you to prove that I'm one of them.
Out of the mouths of fools comes Bill Maher.
Maher, you are just another foolish person
of the Left but only to be pittied. I see Bill
also has to pay a Hooker over 750.00 for
sex?. I can see why.
Joel, You do try very hard to sound intelligent and you succeed the majority of the time (except for the altruistic comment, you might want look up the definition of that one). I'm sure you're a smart guy but I'm with Maher on this one when he questions whether a Senator who believes in god is fit to make sound decisions and even whether or not regular folks who believe in god are capable of making sound decisions. OK, maybe that is too harsh. I'm sorry. Sincerely. I am no one to make such judgments. However, would you feel comfortable if good ol' George "Dub-ya" came outside the Whitehouse tomorrow and said he believes the tooth fairy left 3 trillion dollars to fix the budget under his pillow last night after Laura knocked it out with a frying pan? No. I don't think anyone would feel comfortable with that (though that would be pretty awesome if it were true). That is essentially what religion is. Fiction, a fairy-tale. It's made up and it's gut-wrenching how many innocent people throughout the world have been killed in its name. Religion is responsible for more deaths than any disease or single war in history (although many wars were fought over religious beliefs). I know there isn't anything I can say to change your mind on this just like there is nothing you can say to change my mind. But I'll gladly listen to what you have to say if you so choose to rebut.
And...uh... that comment by Ohyeh (what is that a failed attempt to say Oh Yeah?) what the hell does that even mean? I suppose the character attacks will begin so that he may be discredited. Like we're in politics or something. Next time you have a thought Ohyeh, just let it go. We'll all be better off.
Thanks Luke for those cryptic compliments. :) I really do appreciate them. In return, I find your posture a bit more palatable then even Maher. Maybe you should make a film.
But if I could just push back on your logic regarding the dangers of religion. Firstly, calling them a fairytale is a bit demeaning and not fair at all (little pun for you). Hunger for the transcendent is not a fairytale but is quite universal. Tooth fairy and God in the same category -- now that's just plain ridiculous. Now, as I said before, organized religion can be quite dangerous (not always), even Jesus himself fought against the dangers of religion -- but mostly because it interferes with a genuine relationship with God. Also, if we're talking about war and stuff, you should study your history a bit more thoroughly. Blaming all the wars on religion alone is a bit prejudiced. Other factors were also involved: politics, more primitive cultures, and plain ol' human greed. Just because something is in the name of religion, does not mean its in the name of God. Also, if we're going to blame ideologies, no ideology has created more destruction than secularism. This last century was the bloodiest century in the history of mankind.
And lastly, I don't know what Maher and Charles are so afraid of. Even Christians admit that America has entered a post-Christian stage. In Europe, Christianity has all but died. Of course, the holes where religion stood are not being filled by intelligent agnostics like you would hope. You see, people still long for the transcendent. So Islam is filling Europe and Americans listen to Oprah to tell them how to connect to their inner spirituality. The idea that throwing out religion will solve our problems (whatever those problems are exactly has never really been explained to me), is just wishful thinking. If you don't like religion, fine. But perhaps its more than a fairytale. Perhaps the world is more than what we see with our eyes. Perhaps, Maher and Charles are truly blinded by their pride and can't see what's right in front of their face. I may be wrong, but so may you. I think that's fair to say.
Also, Luke, yes I might be "trying hard to sound intelligent", or the other alternative is that this might authentically be me. No use in getting into a contest over the internet trying to prove our identities, but it seems somewhat difficult for you to accept my intellectual capacity. Oh, and I used altruistic exactly as I intended. I actually looked it up thinking that perhaps I was mistaken and you caught me in a vocab mixup. But alas, I breathed a sigh of relief to see my security as a thinking person has been validated by my acceptable word choice. :)
So I saw the film last week, and I urge people to go see it, so they can come up with more specific critiques.
Part of the Film delves into Bill Maher's own Crisis of
Faith, being himself, a "Fallen-Away" Roman Catholic.
He is also the Child (along with his Sister),of a Jewish Mother and a Catholic Father. I'm not going into all the
details, but I do want to advise people to Please, not
"Throw The First Stone" about anybody, in this Blog,
or in or out, of this Film.
I myself, believe in the separation of Church and State,
according to the U.S. Constitution, and at the same time, I DO NOT deny the presence of "The Ineffable" in my life.
Mr. Maher is trying to present a comparison between
the "Big Three" mono-theistic religions, Christianity,
Judism, and Islam, and their Fire and Sword adherents.
(Speaking of Fire...He did leave out the 4th, or as some historians would say, the first monotheistic
religion, the Persian followers of Zoroaster).
.
Mr. Maher also includes the "Speaking in Tongues" Estatic worshipers, which are very easy to mock, by most commonly accepted standards of public behavior,
He goes after Scientology, both as a fake Preacher of it, at London's Speaker's Corner, at Hyde Park (a stand-up comedy routine), and as a solid detractor of this church in the additional "cut-away" scenes.
Yes, there is much here, to offend everybody, but I do defend the film as a stimulus to public discussion, an element of our social discourse that has been sadly diminished in Public, and now, largely carried out on Computers. I affirm the notion that we are all in a
Third Great Awakening (Please see encyclopedia
entries for information on the First, and Second Awakenings) in this country of ours. History has
much to tell us, if only we read and discuss what we
read.....we can join in the many conversations that we need to have now, about everything.
Thank You, Mr. Maher, for giving me
something to talk about !
Sean The Piper.
