Today, Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver is acknowledged as one of the greatest movies of all time. (AMC users rank it at No. 21 in a list of 100.) But back in 1977, the flick didn't earn that same level of respect at the Oscars. Though nominated in four categories, it didn't take home a single trophy. That deficit seems especially egregious considering De Niro's breathtaking performance. Now consider The Fighter and, even more so, its co-star, Christian Bale. Like De Niro, Bale is among the premier actors of his generation; like Taxi Driver, The Fighter looks likely to receive some prominent snubs. Indeed, like Taxi Driver, The Fighter may not do much winning if AMC's Oscar poll is your predictor.

As of this morning, The Fighter leads in only one category, and even there Christian Bale's lead, for Best Supporting Actor, has narrowed. Bale currently leads Geoffrey Rush, 48 percent to 39 percent. But the movie's chances, according to AMC voters, run out there: for Best Picture, only 4 percent think The Fighter will win, way behind the The King's Speech's 33 percent. The story is the same in the Best Director category: the movie's director, David O. Russell, currently sits in fourth, with only 6 percent of the vote, while the Coen brothers (True Grit) lead, with 35 percent. And in the Best Supporting Actress voting, neither Amy Adams (11 percent) nor Golden Globe Award winner Melissa Leo (15 percent) can touch the leader, True Grit's Hailee Steinfeld (45 percent).
