The Movie List - Top 10 Movies That Inspired Too Many Sequels

Success is addictive so when Hollywood finds a formula that works don't expect them to leave it behind anytime soon. Need proof? How about movies that not only have a Part 2 but also a Part 3, 4 and 5. Tonight, we count down the top 10 movies that inspired too many sequels.
10. Saw (2004): This surprise hit, the cinematic equivalent of TP'ing someone's house, spawned "torture porn," and a new sequel each Halloween.
9. Lethal Weapon (1987): Two L.A. cops reluctantly pair up to take on drug lords -- in four separate movies. By No. 4, the formula was as old as the actors.
8. Police Academy (1984): This dumb cop comedy somehow yielded a video store's worth of mediocre movies, two TV series and a theme park attraction.
7. American Pie (1999): The original was embraced for its winsome take on teen sex, but two sequels and four direct-to-video movies later, things got stale.
6. Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl (2003): Based on a theme park ride with lusty robots, this series became an unstoppable juggernaut of plot-less, confusing sequels.
5. Friday the 13th (1980): Jason didn't actually kill anyone in the first installment of this slasher series, except the hopes of anyone who didn't want a dozen sequels.
4. Alien (1979): The Oscar-winning movie inspired successful sequels then mated with the Predator franchise for several more flicks. Oops.
3. Star Wars (1977): This epic blockbuster's prequels sprung a variety of horrors on the world: Most notably Jar-Jar Binks and George Lucas's ego.
2. Rocky (1976): This franchise provided a realistic every-man hero; its sequels had that hero ending the Cold War and boxing as a senior citizen.
1. Godzilla (1954): The great green monster has starred in 29 movies so far, including the '98 American version which defines the phrase "massive failure."

It’s just right to recognize movie that made a great impact on the movie industry. This is a way to compensate that their hard work and dedication to produce a successful movie had been paid off. Everyone has heard that the unemployment rate is crucial to ascertaining when the recession is over – and it's true. As long as the jobless rate remains high, and more people are in the condition of underemployment (part time vs. full time) then we won't get too far. Well, the good news is that the unemployment rate fell 2 tenths of a percent over October 2009, and the underemployment rate fell 3 tenths of a percent in the same month. It's a start – it doesn't mean fewer people need payday loans – but if this improvement becomes constant, then real recovery is not so distant.
I have to say that I'm relieved that Saw and American Pie were both on this list. Saw could keep going forever and people would still watch them - the sad part is that the Saw movies are still going to theater. At least the American Pie movies are going directly to dvd.

This list is pretty good but the only problem i have is number 3 and definitely number 1. Star Wars did not spawn "unnecessary" sequels because George Lucas had a plan for Star Wars to have that many movies and they were all great... thats why he started with EPISODE FOUR to indicate that he had a plan and was going to do episodes 1-3 later. My problem with number 1 is that... GODZILLA HAS NO SEQUELS!!! I thought that number 1 was definitely going to go to Jaws (which should be above a lot of these movies anyway) but it went to a movie that shouldn't be on this list in the first place. Godzilla had plenty of remakes, just like Dracula or Frankenstein, but they aren't on this because they don't belong... just as Godzilla does not belong. If Godzila and Star Wars were taken out and Jaws was put as number 1 then i would like this list a whole lot better.
p.s. in place for star wars, maybe scary movie? makes more sense in my opinion anyway
Alright, there is nothing too wrong with this list except for the first comment, which is completely unrelated to anything. It just looks like someone copied a piece of an economics essay into the comment box because they thought it would be funny. Well it isn't and you should feel horrible, because you are a terrible person and i hate you, however i completely agree with the comment above me. The person that wrote it knows what they are talking about and is probably extremely sexy unlike you because i get the feeling your a fat chick.

I think the pirates of caribbean definitely made too many sequels. They should have stopped after two movies. They are getting worse. Live Food
