Tribeca Film Festival 2009 - Done Deals, Likely Sales, and Movies Someone Should Pick Up Already

The Tribeca Film Festival is no Sundance but it's still a marketplace for films looking for that all-important distribution deal. Here's a look at how things stand at the midway point.

What Got a Deal

Documentaries are ahead of the game. Even though they're considered a tougher sell, three have found a home so far: Lost Son of Havana, The Fixer: The Taking of Ajmal Naqshbandi, and Defamation. Granted, only Defamation won a theatrical release, but it's a start. Lost Son (picked up by ESPN) and The Fixer (picked up by HBO) will both air sometime in August.


What's Likely to Get a Deal

Narrative films with all-star casts are no-brainers for acquisition, so it's no surprise Meg Ryan's quirky black comedy Serious Moonlight is generating interest, as is Don McKay, a neo-noir starring Thomas Haden Church and Elisabeth Shue. But it's The Eclipse, starring Ciaran Hinds and Aidan Quinn,

which seems to be heating up for a bidding war -- potential buyers such as Magnolia and Lionsgate think it could be a word-of-mouth hit.

What Should Get a Deal
My Last Five Girlfriends is a hilarious out-of-the-ordinary British comedy, with few real stars known stateside. (Michael Sheen just has a cameo and Naomi Harris is the fifth girlfriend.) But this could be the kind of flick that launches careers -- lead actor Brendan Patricks is as fresh as Hugh Grant was coming off of Four Weddings and a Funeral. "I hope it gets a distributor who'll nurture it and give it the release it deserves," Harris told AMC News. In truth, everyone here feels that way.
