The Newsdesk 01.26.09 - Ledger and Streep Are SAG Winners; Paul Blart Is Unstoppable

• The SAG Award winners offered a peek at how the Oscar race might pan out. The late Heath Ledger scored a posthumous win for The Dark Knight, while the cast of Slumdog Millionaire, Sean Penn, and Meryl Streep all took home trophies.

• Paul Blart: Mall Cop topped the box office for a second weekend in a row with an estimated $21.5 million. Blart's success all but guarantees that the "crazy name/mundane profession" genre will continue for years to come. What have you wrought, Will Ferrell?

• Push took both the Audience and the Grand Jury award at the Sundance Film Festival over the weekend. The movie, which goes by the full title Push: Based on the Novel by Sapphire (fit that on a marquee!), also won a Special Jury prize for acting for star Mo'Nique. 

• Slumdog Millionaire is experiencing the inevitable Oscar-favorite backlash, with critics wondering if Danny Boyle's film glamorizes poverty. More concerning is the blatant false advertising -- 120 minutes and nary a single wealthy pooch.

• Drew Barrymore claims that a third Charlie's Angels movie is in the works and the search is on for a new Angel. Rihanna is rumored to be in consideration.

• It looks like Seth Rogen's dreams of playing a costumed hero will have to wait, as his Green Hornet project appears to have stalled indefinitely. Good thing Rogen's got that whole comedy thing to fall back on.

• In case you're one of the many angered over The Dark Knight's Oscar snub, keep in mind that co-screenwriter Jonathan Nolan is okay with being left out of the race. That said, there's always the write-in category.
