Remembering Paul Newman: Greatest Movies and Quotes

Paul Newman died Friday of cancer at age 83, at his home in Connecticut, according to reports.  He was a master of playing archetypes, a great actor and director, a philanthropist and race car driver. He was nominated for an Oscar 10 times, and won the Best Actor award for his role in The Color of Money (1986), in which he continued the story of "Fast" Eddie Felson, the pool shark he first introduced in The Hustler (1961). He also won an Honorary Academy Award in 1986.  His first movie was The Silver Chalice in 1954, and his last screen appearance was in the Road to Perdition in 2002.  His final role was as the voice of Doc Hudson in the animated movie Cars in 2006. AMC named him one of its Hollywood Icons.  He is survived by five children and wife Joanne Woodward, whom he married in 1958 and who starred alongside Newman in numerous films, including The Long, Hot Summer (1958).

Paul Newman will be missed. His acting was extraordinary, and will especially be remembered for "Sully" in Nobody's Fool and Max in Empire Falls. It will be fun to see the retrospectives, but sad that he is not watching them with us.

My first crush was Paul Newman. I was 7 yrs. old when Butch and Sundance came out. I didn't see the movie then, but I saw commercials advertising it on TV and of course, B. J. Thomas', "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head" was on all the radio stations then. I remember singing that song as I played outside. I had a crush on Robert Redford at the same time,

Years later, I did finally see the movie and was astonished how my crush hadn't abated at all during that time. He was, until his death, the epitome of sexy. Just hearing his name, thousands of women all over the world are thinking the same thing. Joanne was and is a very lucky woman!

Students at Princeton University have named 24 April Newman's Day. Students try to drink 24 beers over the 24 hours of the day. The tradition stems from a comment that Newman is alleged to have made; "24 hours in a day, 24 beers in a case. Coincidence? I think not." The event is not officially sponsored by the university, and Newman has commented that he would "like to bring an end to the tradition".

He and Frank Sinatra are the only actors to star in Ginault ads and win an Actor Academy Award, an Humanitarian Academy Award and a Special Honorary Academy Award.
