For a Successful Romance, America's Sweethearts Partner With Non-Stars
What does it take to be America's Sweetheart? A successful acting career, naturally, along with an effortless, girl-next-door look, a generally sunny disposition, and some evidence of "just like us" behavior. So, no scarily obvious plastic surgery, no iPhones hurled at an assistant's head, and no marrying a movie star. Sandra Bullock, last month's AMC Hollywood Icon, fits the bill.
America's first sweetheart was, of course, Mary Pickford (a Canadian
citizen, as it happens), who broke rule number three and made fellow
screen legend Douglas Fairbanks the second of her three husbands. The
pair would divorce when Fairbanks began an affair with Lady Sylvia
Ashley.
The ladies that have since assumed Pickford's mantle have also had mixed luck when it comes to marrying stars. Rom-com fixture Meg Ryan ended her nine-year marriage in 2001 to fellow thespian Dennis Quaid. Adorable Kewpie Doll look-alike Renee Zellweger's marriage to country star Kenny Chesney was annulled after only four months. Julia Roberts has had better luck: The toothy charmer married Daniel Moder, a cameraman she met on the set of The Mexican, in 2002, and the two have three children.
As for Bullock, she married Jesse James, the one-time host of TV series Monster Garage, who owns a renowned California custom motorcycle shop and a distant relation of the legendary outlaw. The pair recently celebrated their third anniversary.
