Catwoman's Quick Ascension to Camp Classic

"Classic" doesn't always mean what you think it does. When Halle Berry initially pounced into theaters as Catwoman in 2004, audiences decided they had better things to do. But this crazy interpretation of what a "girl power" superhero movie should be eventually gained itself the well-deserved status of a "camp classic." The film takes place in a dystopian world of crypto-feminism the likes of which we haven't visited since Showgirls: An ugly duckling sensitive artist named Patience (Berry) transforms into a sinewy bondage queen with diamond-tipped nails; a super-villainess (Sharon Stone) rises to power upon discovering that a toxic beauty cream has made her skin "like living marble." It's no surprise that these two women find themselves in opposition. They're two sides of the same tragic coin. Personally, I flip every time for the video-game CGI, the R&B jams that turn fight scenes into Destiny's Child videos, and Berry's shockingly earnest hisses and meows. In its own crazy way, Catwoman is purr-fect.

Catwoman plays tonight Monday, January 21 at 8 p.m. | 7C on AMC.
