DVD Releases: Personal Best, Payday, and Evil Roy Slade

The way the studios keep re-releasing certain movies on DVDs (in alternate versions), you'd think they'd already exhausted their back catalogues. But there are hundreds of films yet to make it to DVD, making their arrival even without bonus features something worth getting excited about. Here are this week's most notable new DVDs.

Personal Best (1982): Once controversial because of its groundbreaking lesbian scenes with Mariel Hemingway, Robert Towne's film remains a topnotch exploration of striving for athletic perfection.

Payday (1973): The great Rip Torn had a rare leading role in this caustic road movie about a hellraising country singer. This DVD comes with a commentary track from director Daryl Duke and producer Saul Zaentz.

Evil Roy Slade (1972): Fans of Blazing Saddles will love this cult classic that appeared two years before the Mel Brooks spoof. John Astin is gleefully funny as a villain who tries to reform for the love of a  schoolmarm.

The Heart is a Lonely Hunter (1968): Years before Little Miss Sunshine, Alan Arkin won his first Academy Award as Best Actor in this touching story of a deaf-mute man who tries to be a Good Samaritan. Be prepared with an extra box of tissues.
