Today, for the first time in history, New Year’s Eve is going by a second name: It’s Planet of the Apes Day. You heard that right. At 10 a.m., Charlton Heston stars in the original version of what may be Hollywood’s greatest argument against evolution. (The hairier members of mankind may counter that it’s an argument "for" the theory.) This will be followed at 12:30 p.m. with a broadcast of its cultishly revered sequel Beneath the Planet of the Apes. Not satsified with a simple double feature, AMC then shows Escape From the Planet of the Apes (2:30 p.m.), Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (4:30 p.m.), and Battle of the Planet for the Apes (6:15 p.m.). At 8 p.m., the monkey business starts all over again with repeat screenings of the two Heston films (the first two in the series) thereby underscoring one of the franchise’s messages: History repeats itself, doesn’t it?
