Some say Angelina Jolie has a face that's too cold for comedies, too modern for period films. How dare they! Hers is the face of the moment and what’s more “right now” than a movie based on a video game? It's somewhat of a miracle that an actress even exists who so perfectly embodies the cartoonish physique and otherworldly beauty of a gaming heroine. In short, the role of Lara Croft Tomb Raider was made for her. Jolie, to her credit, is much too plucky to rest on the laurels that her lips alone could have afforded her. In the Tomb Raider sequel Cradle of Life (tonight at 8 p.m. EST | 7C) , she takes what was essentially a video game programmer’s late night fantasy and turns it into a feminist icon. Lara Croft is an entirely independent woman who remains just that right up through the film's final frames. Anyone who winces at a female character who's so emotionally detached should remember that Indiana Jones preferred working alone, too.
