The Compelling Sands Of Iwo Jima

Sands Tonight on AMC, John Wayne and Forrest Tucker star in one of the best-loved WWII movies ever made, Sands of Iwo Jima.  The film is rife with history, and cultural references are still made to the landmark film to this day.  In case you didn't know:

-Various marine who actually fought in WWII actually appear in the film -- including the three men that were part of the famous American flag raising.
-The film marks the first time the term lock and load was used in a movie.
-TV loves to mention this film.  You'll find it in episodes of The Sopranos, The Simpsons and King of the Hill.
-Drive By Truckers have a song called The Sands of Iwo Jima.
-You can see a scene from the movie in the movie satire, Thank You For Smoking.
-The movie was nominated for four Oscars, but, unfortunately, won none.
-The movie was such a success that Wayne was asked to put his footprints in the cement outside the famous Grauman's in Hollywood. Weirdly, black sand from Iwo Jima was mixed into the cement.  Waybe also stuck his fist into the cement.
-The film is considered so important that a documentary of the making of the film was made, hosted by TV critic Leonard Maltin.
