Happy birthday Charlie!

Hope you remembered to send a birthday card to Charlie Kaufman, screenwriter of such mesmerizingly twisted new classics as Being John Malkovich, Adaptation, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. He's 48, though you'd never know it to watch him in this clip from the Charlie Rose show (the only time he's ever been interviewed on television).

Kaufman is currently at work on his first film as a director, Synecdoche, New York. The best condensation I can give of the plot is to say that it sounds like his version of Fellini's 8 1/2 or Bob Fosse's All That Jazz, with Philip Seymour Hoffman as a theater director whose life unravels as the play he's putting together becomes more overwhelmingly complex. (Read how the LA Times synopsized the script.) And you gotta love a guy who names his movie after a term that only an English major would know. (Well, we English majors love him.)

It's also the birthday of Italian actress and director Asia Argento, whom I met once in a bowling alley in Buffalo NY. But I'll tell you that story next time it's her birthday.
