Horror Power Ranking List - June 23, 2008
I'd like to take a moment to talk about the biggest story this week: The passing of Stan Winston. As shocking as his sudden passing was, it's even more shocking to me how few people knew who he was. Sure, they knew his creations -- the Alien, Predator, the dinosaurs from Jurassic Park -- but Stan Winston's name should be as well known as Jim Henson's. I would have hoped such recognition would have come in life, but if he becomes a household name now, so be it. If you do one thing this week, tell everyone you know who Stan Winston was, and what he did.
Okay, after the number one slot, back to the snark:

Stan Winston Words can not do justice to how great this man was, and how deeply his passing will be felt not just by the film industry, but also by anyone who enjoys film. Which, let's be fair, is everyone. Read more about it here. |

The Happening Yeah, I liked it. What up, people? If it wasn't for the above item, M. Night Shyamalan's horror flick would still be sticking it out at number one. Shyamalan is a masterful horror director, the film looks great, and it did well at the B.O. So there. |

Mirrors The Kiefer Sutherland flick has been routinely hated on, at least on the Internet. But every new still, every new poster, every trailer makes this look like a spooky fun time, and personally, I can't wait. |

Taken The trailer for this Liam Neeson kidnapping thriller just popped up on the 'nets, and on my radar. Though there's been a fair share of "father goes after the kidnappers" thrillers, Neeson's monologue kicks arse, and the movie looks frightening. |

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor This is turning into movie trailer week on the Power Rankings, but a new look at The Mummy 3 over at Papa Johns (Really? Really.) reminded me just how much fun the undead action series is. And also that Brendan Fraser can be awesome. |

The Strangers Though The Strangers is slowly fading out of theaters, and our minds, there's been talk of a sequel. Honestly, I hope [*spoilers on*] Liv Tyler's character goes all Ripley on the Strangers' alien nest. [*spoilers off*] That would be rad. |

Troll Ali Lohan, Lindsay Lohan's little sister, and creator of the most hilariously titled album ever (A Lohan Family Christmas) is up for a role in the Troll remake. A Troll remake? Starring a tiny Lohan? Must. Stop. Laughing. |

Friday the 13th So here's a question: With torture porn ruling at the B.O., The Strangers a huge hit, and Jason almost 30 years old, how relevant is the slasher series to horror? |

Rosemary's Baby It seems like no one else was really upset about the Rosemary's Baby remake (Reminder: I think the original is boring), so yay to Platinum Dunes. Though, the fact that no one is really buzzing about this at all isn't a good sign. |

Twilight And now, a song: Oh where, oh were has my Twilight gone. Oh where, oh where can it be? With it's hot young cast, and it's youth appeal, oh where, oh where can it be? Seriously, what's the haps, Twilight? You gonna give me any news, or what? |

It's great to see people giving Stan Winston the respect he so deserves. Horror fans have had nothing but great things to say about the man who created some of the most badass creatures known to film... except for that '80s rocker hack who hosts Fangoria Radio.
Anyways, Stan's work and contributions to the genre will never be forgotten. I will never forget the time I watched "Aliens" for the first time at the young age of 8 and spent the entire night hiding under the coffee table. Hahaha. Man, was I glad to see the sun come up.
"They mostly come out at night...Mostly."
