Monsterfest Talk Forum: Horror fans continue to discuss the subtle art of remaking classic horror films. Microwaved says, "I too generally don't have a problem with remakes. As far as a successful remake, the only one that even comes close for me was Zack Snyder's Dawn of the Dead remake. I just wish that if they are going to remake something, then find a director that has a passion for the original and a way to make it better." This prompted me to mention Gus Van Sant's shot-for-shot remake of Psycho, which had an obvious passion for the original, yet not much else. To this DRKellogg responded, "The Psycho remake broke the cardinal rule...never try to reinvent Hitchcock. Gus Van Sant didn't WANT it to fail, but I have the feeling that sometime during the process, he realized the magnitude of what he was doing and ultimately couldn't deliver or stopped trying."
