The Halloween Series: The 3 Absolute Best

Halloween It's almost time for the most important holiday of the year: Halloween.  Here in New York, we all get gooned up and go the million-strong Halloween parade. But if you're in the mood just to chill and scare yourself with the Halloween series, you can catch Halloween 1 through 5 on AMC on the 31st. Here are the three that I think are worth watching.  (Click each title for the movie trailer!)

1) Halloween -- John Carpenter really did it right with the first film in the series, released in 1978.  From his spot-on use of the steadicam to his brilliant casting of Michael Myers, this is one of the best horror films of all time.  Oh, and Jamie Lee Curtis is hot.

2) Halloween H20 -- How many times can Jamie Lee kill Michael Myers? She tries over and over again in this 1998 film, the seventh installment of the series.  That scene on the balcony is killer...or is it?

3) Halloween --  It's a must-see if you're a fan of the way director Rob Zombie does horror.  Zombie's take on the Halloween franchise is gruesome and bloody with an insightful look at the evils of the psych ward.  You won't exactly feel sorry for  Michael, but you'll understand him better.

I completely agree with those 3 but I'd add Halloween II to my list. I've always enjoyed that one as well and like how it picked right up where the first one left off. Almost feels like the full story with those 2 together.

I really enjoyed Rob Zombie's film as well.

default userpic

H20 was terrible, it completely ignored the fact that part 4, 5 and 6 existed, therefore making it an insult to true Halloween fans. It is not part of my collection and I almost had to pick up the butcher knife myself after paying $7 to see it at the theater when it was released. If you have any doubts just listen to the fake re-recorded Dr. Loomis in the opening sequence, if that doesn't make you vomit nothing will.

default userpic

I agree with Derek. The first 2 Halloween's were the best (the rest were a joke) and Rob Zombie's film was awesome. Why does AMC neglect to show Halloween 2? They always show the first, 4 and 5th, and then skip the 2nd. I don't get it. (?)

default userpic

Why isnt Halloween 5 included in your list? I mean Halloween 3 is there and that movie is a complete joke due to the fact that Michael is no where in it. I love Halloween 5!

default userpic

The original Halloween is the best, Halloween 2 was OK, but after that they should of stopped with the sequels, because they only got worse and worse.

default userpic

Just replying to Austen's comment, according to the AMC schedule they are showing Halloween 2 tomarrow at noon.

default userpic

Halloween 2 is the best it should be on the list. How halloween 1 and 2 going together is great, picking up were the 1st left off giving you the full story Derek is right.H2O is good because it lets you see what happen to Laurie Strode.

I LOVE ALL THE HALLOWEEN MOVIES. EVEN HALLOWEEN III. THE ONLY THING ABOUT HALLOWEEN III IS, THEY SHOULD HAVE NAMED IT "SEASON OF THE WITCH".I ALWAYS WATCH MY DVD'S OF THEM, AND EVEN WHEN THEY'E ON AMC. MONSTERFEST IS THE BEST THING TO HAPPEN TO TELEVISION EVERY YEAR. AFTER DONALD PLEASENCE (DR. LOOMIS) DIED, THE OTHERS MOVIES SEEM TO BE A LITTLE EMPTY, BUT I STILL LOVE THEM.

The first two Halloweens are great John Carpenter movies, but parts 4 and 5 are the two I really look forward to. the rest are just filler, though the girls in the remake were pretty hot

I can't see how all of you can approve of 2007. As a TRUE Halloween fan and self-proclaimed expert on the series, Halloween 2007 was dreadful. I like Rob Zombie's other two films for their campy and gory quality and dialogue, but applying these same touches to a classic isn't kosher.

In addition to the unreasonable amount of gore in this film, Zombie ruins the idea of Michael Myers. Two of the scariest things about the original character are:

1) There is no explanation for his madness (as far as we know the first 7 years of his life were normal). In Halloween 5, and Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers, the script writers decided to make a plot twist to continue the film. They explained that Michael was the product of a pagan cult ritual and as such, was an unstoppable killer. Although Zombie's take on the upbringing was more plausible, and could potentially happen in real life, it takes away the campy feel of the later sequels and does a lot to ruin the original idea of Michael.

2) Zombie makes Michael mortal. Although extremely strong and able to withstand many injuries (like any other super-human killer), Zombie kills Michael in the end. This also takes away from the campy feel of some of the later films and also takes away some of the scariness of Myers.

Many will agree that John Carpenter's classic was a masterpiece, and as such I don't think it should have been messed with. I also have had to come to terms with a number of other classics being remade into terrible modern crap: The Omen, The Amittyville Horror, Psycho, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre...

Wonder why halloween 5 wasn't listed to be voted on? I know it is one of the weaker ones but still...

Wonder why halloween 5 wasn't listed to be voted on? I know it is one of the weaker ones but still...I still think Halloween 2 is the best horror sequel of all time.

default userpic

Halloween and Halloween 2 were by far the best just because of John Carpenter. The only complaint I have about part 2 is when they reshot the end of part 1, they had Michael fall off of a totally different part of the house. And it is so obvious to catch the mistake it is ridiculous. In part 1, he does not fall off of the front of the house like he does in part 2. And the balcony doesn't even look the same. I still love all the other sequels (except 3) not real sure what that was all about. And if they made 10 more, I would pay to see them all.

default userpic

the original halloween is my pick, its one of the greatest as HG stated. pt 2 is my runner up though. those two just seemed to work really good.

default userpic

I agree in what Mark said. I don't think Movies should be messed with. The original is almost 100% of the time going to be better then the remake. I mean heres a example, look at the exorcist, excellent movie, and look at exorcist 2 the heretic, that was a box office disaster, totally unrelated to the first movie. Terrible plot, terrible acting, basically terrible everything!

default userpic

i dont really understand how halloween 3 fits in with the other halloween movies. where is micheal? my fav is halloween 6, though it is rare to see on tv. they are all pretty awesome! however i was a little disappointed in Rob Zombie's version of the film.

default userpic

As a true halloween fan i like them all, everyone has the right to there own opinion, but i like how they did halloween 3, it was a good scary movie, and made me want halloween 4 even more....and i think rob zombies version was very well done, if u read his reviews he even said himself that it wouldnt be exactly like the original..thats the whole point of a remake...but ressurection was a little weak and i think should have been rethought, but o well, i think if u look at them all with an open mind they all kick ass!

default userpic

The best Halloween movies are the original, halloween 2, halloween 4 and Rob Zombie's Remake. Halloween 5 and 6 while not the greatest are much better than Halloween 3 Halloween Resurrection and Halloween H20 those 3 are tied for the worst in the series, i don't know for the life of me why so many people think H20 is one of the best sequals. My favorite is the original, with h4 close behind, my guilty pleasure is h6.

default userpic

Halloween 3 didn't even have anything to do with the Halloween series, period. So why is it even included? It was a good movie, but not part of the series. The best is always the original. Always :)

default userpic

ive been a halloween fan for as long as i can remember something about mike meyers, but if i had ta choose id say H6 to which this azz of amc Cavett Binion, All Movie Guide said it was the worst hell i bet he doesnt even know who the man in black in that film is, anyhow MIKE MYERS RULES!!!!!!!!

default userpic

oh ya what hell was up with Halloween 3 who the hell did that and what were they thinking naming it after H, it had nothing ta do with mike although it had mike on a tv as himseif, what the hell...

default userpic

Halloween III Season Of The Witch is definently my favorite. It has nothing to do with the other movies, but it was weird, disturbing, and unique. Just what you want in a movie like this. I especially liked the music, very memorable. You just got to wonder what they were thinking (or smokeing). I liked the others too but you can't beat the creepy weirdness of this one.

default userpic

I think it's undisputable that the original Halloween is the best. Not only did it pave the way... but it was so effective because of Carpenter's way of hiding Myers throughout the film till the end. H2 was a good pickup from where the second left off. I won't even mention the 3rd installment. H4,5, and 6 were acceptable in my book, however I feel that they showed Myers face to often. This took away from the original reason that people were so scared of him, yet they were still more effective than the average scary movie. H2O was cool just for the fact that you got a veteran actor to come back where most wouldn't due to an inflated ego. It would be cool if the remaining producers who helped out Zombie picked up from an earlier place in the series and continued Halloween in a tasteful way, the way it should've been continued.

default userpic

H6 and the new one are my favs. i like the others (exp 3). i just wish they would have made more like friay the 13. halloween movies are the best slasher movies ever. i hope rob or others pick up where it left off or remake the old ones!

default userpic

Halloween 1,2 and H20 are the best. I was embarrassed to be in the movie theater watching Rob Zombie's movie. I grew up then and we didn't talk like that. That is Zombie's trash mouth. I know they wanted to show Michael Myers awful life, but all the characters talked trash even when they were just having a conversation. Dumb and trashy!!!! It was a super hot weekend. People wanted to get someplace cool and Zombie got lucky using the name Halloween.

default userpic

The original Halloween was by far, and will always be, the best. John Carpenter and Debra Hill were the masters and it should have never been duplicated. Halloween 2 and Halloween 6 were probably the next couple of best.

Rob Zombie's was ok, but he should have done something new and left the original to stand alone - he seems to have problems doing original stuff.

default userpic

i absoulutely love halloween 1,and 2. the rest like Halloween H20, and reserection were really retarded and just a waste of time watching.

default userpic

i love all the Horror Movies my fav is alway will be jason and michael leatherface

default userpic

I LOVE ALL Halloween movies!

I really enjoyed watching Rob Zombie's! After the Orginal Halloween..His would have to be my fave, and then the rest! :-)

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

default userpic

OMG! I love halloween 5! its the best!!! along with the original!! im the biggest fan of m myers!! rock on all you fans!!!

default userpic

come on guys just for giggles ya ll know halloween 1 2 H20 and which ever one it is with Tommy Doyle all grown up are the best ones of them all!!!!!

default userpic

Id say halloween 4, 5 and halloween h20..:) and alos the 1st one ...i mean those are the best ones

default userpic

HALLOWEEN (1978) is my favorite film, regardless of genre of all time.

I just went last night to the movie theater, they were showing parts 4 and 5...

Part 5 is, was awful... if they didn't kill Rachel, it might have had a chance, but there was awful direction and the sounds and stupid cops were awful... there was a 35 minute barn scene. It's the worst...

Here is the order...

1. Halloween (1978)

2. Halloween 2

3. Halloween 4 (great, great sequel, good acting)

That's it... the rest have good points and bad points... and well Halloween 3 is a really good horror movie and I love Tom Atkins.. it's not a true halloween movie...

Part 5 was garbage...

Rob Zombie's remake made little or no sense and went against everything that made Hallowen so great... how could a "fan" make that movie?

H20 was the best of the rest, and I like Jamie lee, but it wasn't very scary or good...

Halloween 6 is awful...

Resurrection had a cool 1st scene with Jamie Lee, but the rest is awful.. the idea wasn't that bad, but the execution was good awful...

And a bit of trivia... the credits in part 1 are wrong... it lists Michael at age 6 and age 23... but he was 21....

Halloween is great and parts 2 and 4 are outstanding sequels... Loomis kicks ass in both... and they are good scripts...

default userpic

Okay, I like ALL the HALLOWEEN movies, except for #3, why is that? Because It's so BLAH. Nothing to do with MICHAEL MYERS, DUH.

#1 is a great movie

#2 is even better

#4 is one of my personal favorites

#5 is okay, not too scary

#6 The curse, I can't wait to se that one

tonight. I haven't seen it in years. Though it's a bit bad, I think this is the one where MICHAEL kills a crap load of people. I love that

#7 H2O a fan favorite, could have been a little better. Was alright, not too scary

#8 Resurrection was pretty good. I think BUSTA RHYMES did a fantastic job on this one

#9 ROB ZOMBIEs version was awesome. That little boy(I believe his name is TYLER), did an amazing job of portraying MICHAEL as a youth. I didn't like the ending where "LAURIE", blew his face off. I want a sequel.

Now if we can talk ROB ZOMBIE into doing a few other films, that would be awesome.

1. Friday the 13th

2. IT

3. Dawn of the dead

4. Amityville

5. Texas chainsaw massacre

How awesome would that be

default userpic

Ok, the three best Halloween movies are the original, the second and Halloween H2o. Halloween three, being exempt from this discussion holds no weight as a true sequel. I am as big a Halloween fan as the next guy, the original being my favorite horror movie of all time, but 4 and 5 are some of the worst horror movie sequels ever made. The acting in both are absolutely terrible and I am stunned that so many have applauded such trash. Also, it took until Halloween H20 to finally get his mask right again. I couldn't even enjoy 4 or 5 because of how awful the mask (and acting) was. Did you also notice how in H20 they completely discredit and wipe out the storylines of the succesive sequels (after 2) because of the ridiculous directions which had been taken in the story. In my opinion they only should have made 1,2,and h2o and pulled the plug after that. By the way ressurection was AWFUL and a poor attempt to explain away the only satisfying ending to the series imaginable. Although, I didn't completely hate Halloween 6. I think it was an odd avenue to explore with the whole "curse of thorn" but the acting was some of the best of the sequels and Michael didn't look as out of place. I've yet to see the "better" directors extended cut which is supposedly very rare and bootleggy.

In a halloween movie, it all comes down to atmosphere and suspense with a heavy reliance on the score to set the mood. Please stop butchering this franchise. And Rob Zombie, I applaud your attempts at making a somewhat stand-alone reimagining of the classic, but come on, really. Step outside of your comfort zone and try to put some suspense into your films.

I like all of the Halloween movies. My ringtone is the theme music to Halloween. It freaks people out when someone calls me. I really like the remake Rob Zombie did. It told more of how he became how he is. But the very first and second ones are the best!!!!!!! The H20 was pretty good also. My favorite part is when Michael and Lori first meet at the door and his head turns left to right, which he does in the first one also. Best scary movies of all time .........

default userpic

Michael Myers is my all time fav killer i have all the halloween movies execpt for #3 that was so stupid michael wasnt even in it..I wanna see another rob zombie halloween he did an awesome job but some things didnt make sense like i never relized he had a handicapped step father but oh well it was still an awesome movie and i can never get enough of michael myers!!!!!!!

default userpic

Why is everyone praising Zombie? His remake was a disgrace, and anyone who likes it cannot be a true Halloween fan. In my opinion, what makes Michael Myers the best of the "Big 3" (incl. Jason and Freddy) is the mystery behind his psyche and his boogyman-like quality. Zombie attempts to shed light on this, which he should have left alone, and then did it poorly. Also, no one can replace Donald Pleasance. Halloween 1, 2, and 4 were the best.

default userpic

Alright, now to educate. The original Halloween is great! Halloween II is terrific. 4 & 5 are nothing short of spectacular. 6 is outstanding. H20 on the other hand doesn't live quite up to the mystery and essence of Michael Myers. Many aspects of that film feel and were subsequently "off" in regards to the others. Halloween: Ressurection brought the focus back away from the "WB" stars that were billed in H20, and brought the attention back to the real story. Rob Zombie's Halloween was absolutely invigorating. Now, I don't agree with many of the changes that Zombie has made, but Carpenter told Zombie to make this one as his own, and he has. Truly marvelous. So my Top 3 has become MY Top 4, because I can:

Halloween (1978)

Halloween: The Curse Of Michael Myers

Halloween: Resurrection

Rob Zombie's Halloween

Though in retrospect, it is truly hard to put them in favored order, I watch all of them year round and love every single one (with exception to Halloween 3: The Season Of The Witch).

And to note somebody's previous comment about the young boy who played Michael Myers in Rob Zombie's Halloween, his name is Daeg Faerch. Adult Michael was played by Tyler Mane (Sabertooth from X-Men)

default userpic

Halloween the original 1978 by far is the best of all. It was a simple storyline with a beginning middle and end. Yea it's great that there were sequels to entice audiences like myself. But nothing compares to the original. The best 3 are Halloween 1,2 Haloween h20,

default userpic

Halloween 2-8 was crapy all horror flicks don't need sequels

default userpic

Halloween is a true classic there could never be another like it *** was preety good Rob Zombies was cool when he was little the rest was stupid there could never be another Jamie lee or Donald Pleasence ovarall all the halloweens get an 5 out of ten

My top 3 are

Halloween (1978)

Halloween H20

Halloween 6 the curse of Michael myeres (alright the rest was dumb)

default userpic

I havn't seen rob zombies halloween yet. but I do intend to. I own the 1978 version and love it, I watch i all the time. I will be sh***ng in high cotton when I get the rest of them, because I love 1-7, except for 3, that one dosn't count. There is no best one for me really. If seequils keep coming through out my life time I will be a verry happy man. The phenominon of micheal myers is the best part of all the halloweens. I dress as micheal myers every year for halloween and the response I get from some of the kids, the teenagers and the parrents is priceless and the best part is Idont have to jump around or scream or what not, all I have to do is be visible walk and keep my mouth shut. The shape does the rest.

default userpic

I absolutley disliked rob zombies remake. michael was not even the same character anymore. his behaviors were too much like a typical psycho killer, not like typical "michael". im a HUGE fan of the halloween series, the 1st 2nd and 4th are my favorite, and i dont mean to put that one down, well i really do, but if you are a true halloween fan, you will know what i am talking about. not to mention the camera angles were not typical. if youre gonna do a remake, do it RIGHT.

default userpic

Obviously, you are not a true fan if you LOVED rob zombies remake.

Yes, the little boy was amazaing as an actor, but think about it, did it go along with any of the previously made halloween movies?

and michael does not die. the end.

in this movie, michael is not what he was in the other movies. he is no longer a big mysterious character, instead rob zombie tried showing some of his mysteries, and although he was told to make it his own, a true halloween fan should not try to piece together any puzzles because then the villian, micharl in this case, becomes just like all the other mass killers, i.e. jason and freddy.

default userpic

Can we quit praising crapfests like Rob Zombie's "Crap-O-Ween"? If you claim to enjoy the new version...then you obviously have no comprehesion of what constitues good storytelling, good filmmaking, or good acting. The end.

default userpic

love all the Horror Movies my fav is alway will be jason and michael leatherface

default userpic

#1 was by far the best. The rest....I can take 'em or leave 'em. My thing with sequels is that there has to be consistancy when making them. All too often, the original plot is forgotten about and there ends up being all of these other plot lines. Example: In #1, the nurse that is with Dr. Loomis when going to see Michael gets attacked, escapes, and probably wants to hide. Then she shows up in #2 ( supposedly the same night ) trying to stop Dr. Loomis and she looks like nothing happened to her. And she is the one who tells Dr. Loomis that Laurie is Micheal's sister? Why would a nurse and not the doctor know that one? As far as sequels go, Godfather II was the only one to pull it off with total perfection.
