Poll: Your Favorite Werewolf Movie
The legend of the werewolf goes back to the time of Petronius. But it was Gervase of Tilbury back in medieval times who associated the shape shifting manimal with the full moon. More recently, the silver bullet was added by writers as a way to kill the beast. Now, you can put your own paw print in AMC werewolf history. I want to know what you favorite werewolf film is. So vote in our poll and make your feelings known.

The original Wolfman is my favorite werewolf movie, but An American Werewolf in London is very very close behind. I mean closer like photo finish close.
Does anyone consider Brotherhood of the Wolf a werewolf film?
And I know we have talked about this before but where does Ginger Snaps fall in this poll as well?
the wolfman is definately my favorite, but the howling is very, very close behind.
Ginger Snaps--first one only--is a delight. What about Dog Soldiers? Or the Company of Wolves? The original Wolf Man gets kudos because it pretty much invented the legend--I mean, the silver bullet and pentagram and stuff, that wasn't ever part of folklore.
Oliver Reed's Curse of the Werewolf was my favorite.
I voted for American Werewolf in London. I don't think they've managed to better this one yet. 25 years later and it's still as scary as it always was.
AWIL is still the most frightening of all the werewolf movies, although The Wolf Man holds a special place in my heart as the one that defined the genre. Check out the original Werewolf of London with Henry Hull, though. Many of the origin story ideas that get credited to WM were already there 6 years earlier (full moon, bite-passes-the-curse, bipedal wolf creature). Curt Siodmak (WM's writer)added the silver bullet (taken from vampire lore) and the pentagram (no connection to anything). And the full moon never gets mentioned in WM, not 'til the sequels.
the wolfman is pretty cool but the howling was also good i really cant choose
I see that the wolf man is a close 2nd. To everyone reading this I read recently that there is gonna be a remake of the wolf man starring bencio del toro and anthony hopkins as his father.
The original Wolf Man is my favorite. AWIL was half comedy and some of the makeup looked very fake to me. But it was decent. The Howling would be number two because of the eerie atmosphere and make-up effects are up there.
I'll Admit, I Love The Classics Like THE WOLF MAN, But I Think THE HOWLING Deserves The Nod In This Case. THE WOLF MAN May Have Originated The Werewolf Craze In Cinema, But THE HOWLING Perfected The Werewolf Craze In Extending The Lycanthrope Legend and The Visuals Were Great that No Modern Werewolf Can Ever Duplicate. Hands Down, Go With The Either THE WOLF MAN or My Personal Choice THE HOWLING.
silver bullet!
THE OLD SAYING HOLDS TRUE.EVEN A MAN WHO IS PURE AT HEART AND SAYS HIS PRAYERS BY NIGHT MAY BECOME A WOLF WHEN THE WOLFBANE IS IN BLOOM AND THE AUTUNM MOON SHINES BRIGHT...LON CHAINEY JR.
Ginger Snaps!! Awesome movie.
Dog Soldiers!!!!
Come on the howling over AWIL. Seriously? Wasnt the howling suppose to be a comedy also? For the record Neil Marshall's Dog Soldiers probally the best werewolf movie. But from this list how can you not pick AWIL?
Well, you left out quite a few, including Universal's House of Dracula and House of Frankenstein. But hey, nobody's perfect. I do agree that Ginger Snaps is (no pun intended) a killer movie.
Also missing are little-seen classics such as The Undying Monster and the 1956 film The Werewolf. Both very nice little low-budget treatments. Thanks for the interesting blog! BTW, The Wolf Man gets my vote, albeit with some serious competition from The Howling (which scared the bejesus out of me when I first watched it alone) and AWIL.
The werewolf has always been one of my favorite all time Monsters. I have liked all of the werewolf films. Of course Lon chaney "The Wolfman" has been my ultimate choice. But in later horror films there have been others that have had more of a edgier quality such as Werewolf in London and the sequal werewolf in Paris. I really loved those.
And of course Stephen Kings Silver Bullet.
EXCELLENT FLICKS all of them.
Nila
Oops I meant the newer versions of the werewolf genre An American Werewolf in London & An American Werewolf in Paris.
What about Cursed with Christina Ricci? That was good too!
Oh and I concur with the need for Silver Bullet to be up there too.
What about Dog Soldiers? That movie is great!
what about silverbullet
DOG SOLDIERS. Yes. Absolute best werewolf movie EVER.
Howling hands down is the scariest. WM beats all based on seniority only. AWIL is an awesome horror/comedy with a great story. The howling is actually scary in many moments. I think Dog soldiers is probably the only other film in the genre that actually tries and mostly succeeds at being scary. can't wait to see benicio del toro take on the classic role though...
